I recently moved to Hamblen county in East TN and am interested in vegetable gardening mostly but also fruits and flowers. I know how and when to grow things in FL but am at a loss here. Does anyone have some sites, books, or advice?
resources for East Tennessee
Great area, which will grow most temperate zone fruits and vegetables. Contact you county agent ( Ag extension) for a local planting guide. It will give general times to start different vegetables and general cultural instructions. Good way to start and you can fine tune from there. Good area for apples, peaches, pears, plums, grapes, etc.
The last time I was there was in 1996 and being a desert dweller i'm probably biased but it looked like a fertile gardening paradise. Obviously tropicals like bananas and pineapples won't work but most vegetables should do great. Based on visits to my grandparents and uncles places (I was born in Morristown) corn, tomatoes, strawberries, beans, potatoes, grapes, plums, peaches, and walnuts all seemed to do fine. In fact the only thing I remember them having any trouble with was rasberries and blackberries....not because they won't grow but rather because they grow wild and can become a nuisance.
