Hi,
I am new to all of this but love having my hands in the dirt. The underneath of my deck is exposed approximately 3' high. I want to plant something that would cover up this space vs attaching lattice. The area is basically full shade, not deep like in the woods but no sun. What do you suggest, ferns, grasses what?? This is just for the back, I want to plant more in front of whatever it is I put there. Thank you:>)
Ferns/Grasses
I had a house with a deck many years ago and put Southern Wood ferns under it. They loved it there and looked really nice. They got well watered too because my kids were small then and had a swimming pool on the deck :-} They can get fairly tall for a fern which would make them ideal for planting shorter things in front.
Thank you for your reply, will they thrive in Zone 4?
You could take a look at vinca minor, aka periwinkle. I seem to remember it tolerates deep, dry shade. If pachysandra would grow there, it would be easier to keep it in bounds.
I am not familiar with Southern Woods ferns. The ferns in my yard brown off if the soil dries out, so we do need to water during dry spells.
