I recently purchased a cute little Jade plant. Since I brought it home, the soil appears to have a layer of mold on the top. Is this due to overwatering? I water it once every week or two. Is that too much? It is also quite humid in the apartment.
Jade Plant with moldy soil
A jade plant is a succulent. Succulent plants hold water, hince the thick leaves. It is similier to a cactus. They need very little water. Scrape of the mold, it does not need to stay there. Don't water for a month. I would take the pot out of the decorative pot so it will dry out faster. Good luck
thanks for the advice! Will do that right away and let you know... I am a first timer with houseplants but don't label me as a "black thumb" just yet! ;)
I (we) would never do that. I have been gardening for years and I am still learning. We will never learn it all, that is why we love DG so much.
I have a large aloe vera plant (not exactly the same as jade), but I haven't watered since I brought it inside in October.
I give my jade plant a minimal watering every two weeks and it's doing great. I only fertilize lightly twice a year, once in spring and again in late summer.
