Planting under eaves

Portland, OR

My house has wide overhang. Rhodies are planted there but reach out for light and water, leaving an unsightly strip next to house. I need suggestions whether to plant something, use river rock, or ....? Thank you. This is on north side of house.

Hi - I'd leave that area as an access trail for painting, etc., and either move plants or plant outside the eave perimeter. You could fill the area with river rock, mulch, bricks, etc. By moving out from under the overhang, there will be much less maintenance work, and the plants will love it! Also, when the plants are mature, the empty space behind them is not noticeable -- Dax

I wouldn't use mulch right up next to your house. That's what I had and when our termite guy came out to inspect, he told us they don't accept that because termites have been known to get into mulch and then of course, they're right there next to your house. I had to rake mine all away from the house and replaced it with living mulch (vinca minor, creeping phlox, etc.). The termite folks are much happier with that. Your idea of river rock would also be acceptable to them.

Thank you dax and Nature. I think river rock is the way to go. I appreciate your taking the time to respond. oldgardengal
