We have retired to North Georgia...getting ready to pull up some old, worn, spinly, shrubs the previous owner used for YEARS to cover the lattace foundation of the porch. I am sure you can imagine... Any suggestions on what to plant? The area gets full sun--runs 12 ft long, 4-5 ft deep and the lattace foundation is 4 ft tall from ground to porch floor. Its the same on both sides of the porch steps. Its a beautiful area...so many possiblilties. Thank you for any and all ideas!
Out with the old...Shrub suggestions Please!!
Welcome to retirement--it's a wonderful place to be in life :-} Hubby and I built our "retirement home" almost 5 years ago and I'm still landscaping. The front of our house has beds all across the front too. One of my favorite shrubs is Dwarf Yedda Indian Hawthorn. It's evergreen (dark green) and gets small, fragrant white flowers in the spring. Mine are now approx. 3 feet tall and have a very nice shape.
Thank you! I have not heard of that shrub...but evergreen AND flowers sound wonderful! I will be sure and look it up...might recognize it. Yes, we are very blessed to be where we are...
Thanks again for your reply!
If I remember correctly, it's a newer variety. It's more disease resistant than regular Indian Hawthorn. We feel very blessed to be where we are too. Welcome to DG too--I think you will really enjoy it here.
Just wondering what zone you are in. Is it 7b? Dianthus is one of my favorites. Mine stays green all winter and is blooming now. It is not a very tall plant, maybe 10" tall. Sedum Autumn Joy is another favorite. It blooms into the fall. It comes up around the middle of February. It gets about 12"to 14" tall. Retired too!!! Yaaaa

We are actually zone 8...you were very close! Thank you for your suggestions! Both are excellent ideas...I had forgotten about Sedum...that would work great as well. I so appreciate the feedback. Dave's people are simply the best! Have a wonderful weekend! Thanks again.
