http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/957642/
As with all of the threads I stat I like to welcome anyone new to our little corner of Daves Garden. Please take the time to read all the past threads. Most of them have some great information in them. There are no dumb questions except for the 1 thats never asked.
Please check in if you are continuing on from part VI. I like to make sure we did not loose anyone. I am still trying to put together the info from the threads into a word document so we all have something to look back on. I will try to edit out user names because I don't want to worry about who is ok with using there name and who has an issue with it ... for what ever reason. I try to keep things on track and a nice calm slow paced thread that everyone can understand.
Welcome and thank you to the loyal readers on this thread
Dave
Propagation: Propagation part VII based on my own experience
Good morning Campers:
Well its going to be interesting today as you know we hit 32 last night and I still have about everyone still in containers... oh well time will tell...
Jim: how are you doing??? Hacksaw is even more stunning than the pics. its a nice chartruse color right now, will it shift into a darler green or stay shartruse???
Dave
I followed you Dave LOL
Dave, I'm glad HS is doing well for you. it does evolve to green over the summer. but it still is a nice plant and fast grower. Jim
Hi everyone, we are having strong wind gusts, cold rain and thunderstorms.Great Day.
It is not as cold as you are Dave. Hope all survives o.k. This weather is just a mess. The winds are coming off the ocean so it must be coming from the Southeast and that means it will continue for awhile yet.
I just got some new babies from Logee's sale the other day.
Camellia 'Fragrant Pink'
Hibiscus - 'Untamed Heart'
Mandevilla x amabilis 'Alice Dupont'
They look good and are small but will soon be nice and big. They stay in the house for a few weeks. The GH temps keep changing so much I do not want them to get stressed.
Oh my God, the sun just came out. There is a chance I will survive another day. LOL I am miserable when there is no sun. I think I am really a nut case but then, I am not alone.
You all have a great weekend if I do not see you. My summer daffodil bulbs just arrived yesterday and if it is not too wet they must go in tomorrow. The grass is now up so high our little schnauzer can not squat without getting a wet butt, so it is time to mow grass. There is alot of that to do. So, see ya when I can. Hugs. JB
Hi JB:
I am glad you got some sunshine today. We crawled upto 60 today and tomorrow is a bed building day. I am so pumped up. I need to plants some of my babies. I have been saving plants for over 2 years waiting for this opprotunity. doing the happy dance la la la...
LOL Stay dry.
Dave
Hmmph. Cold and overcast here, with a chance of flurries on Monday. Fine.
I hear you PC. We have gotten 2 - 4 inches of snow each of the last 2 mornings. They are saying 60 and 62 Monday and Tuesday. What do you believe?
Jeanette
We're supposed to have around 3 inches of the white stuff today (Omaha, NE), but THAT'S the GOOD news! After having weeks of weather flirting in the mid 50's, we are supposed to drop down to 20 on Wed. All my babies with their cute little green heads poking up are not going to like that. I'm hoping the snow cover stays around to help insulate them, actually!
Today I was to open my daffodil stand and the wind gusts are 50 mph and the wind is blowing like I have never seen it blow. I have no clue how I am going to keep the cut bunches from blowing away if I put then on the road stand. The only thing I can do is put them back in the farm on the back deck and sell there. NO one will come in the drive, they love to just stop and pick their bunch and leave. It is self service so they love it.
I hate days like this. On top of it all I have the summer daffodil bulbs to put in and it is so windy it puts my vertigo into gear and I can barely stand on my feet. I would just love to say forget it and go back to bed. Darn weather has not been cooperating at all.
Oh well, nothing we can do about it.
See you all later if I do not blow away or pass out. I am off and running to see what I can do to get these flowers sold. JB
JB, can you put them out without trying to make a stand, i.e., something that would catch the wind? I'm not sure how it would work with that kind of wind, but seems like any cover would act like a kite.
Jeanette
Jeannette, our stands are about 5 ft. tall and 5 ft. wide and are made of wood. They are white and are like two shelves. The bottom shelf has holes to hold big buckets. Top shelf holds flats or pots of flowers. The one by the road is where I usually sell the cut flowers on the honor system, but the wind is just too much at the end of the lane so I have them on the one in the barn yard. They are in small white buckets with holes in the top that hold each bunch. They are o.k. but No one is buying today. Tomorrow it is to be sunny and they will go by the road. We also have a big sign and a Flower Flag by the lane near the farm sign. They all know we are here, but no one is out in this weather. The sun came out and I took the opportunity to plant the summer daffodil bulbs. I want to see how they look this year before I buy hundreds more for next year. They need to be planted in the Spring for summer blooms. They are while and yellow. Very pretty.
My Jasminum nitidum ( 'star jasmine') is in full bloom for the first time since I have it; I brought it into the house to enjoy it. I broke off a stem when I transplanted it last year and just stuck it in a pot of dirt and forgot about it. Today I noticed it has one tiny little flower on it and it is growing so, I am delighted. I love the flowers but the plant is not very pretty.
Some people call them Angelwing Jasmine, Shining Jasmine, Confederate Jasmine as well as Star Jasmine.
The tin roof started to blow off our long barn and my SIL had to come home at lunch time and get up and hammer it back on. I tell you, this wind is miserable. gusts over 50 mph . The only birds I saw today was a big turkey buzzard. Even the birds are not eating like they usually do.
Tonight is Lobster night, so I must bake some potatoes and do a salad. We buy them live and have them cooked at the fish store when we do not have time to do it. We usually have them once a month to give us all a treat. We work hard seven days a week much of the time. In the summer we get to go surf fishing if we are lucky on Sunday Mornings or we go to the Casino for an hour or so. You just must take a break once in awhile. Life it too short not to.
Have a nice evening, and a wonderful Palm Sunday. Tomorrow we will no doubt mow grass because it was impossible to do it today. We have alot of grass to cut. Usually takes three of us about three hours. If I do it alone, it takes me all day. I need to take breaks or my back gives me trouble riding the tractor for so long at a time. See what happens when you get old? Hugs to all.. JB
JB you are always so busy, if only I could do half of what you do, then maybe I wouldn't watch the babies so closely. :))
JB, you must live in a wonderful community! I can't imagine putting flowers out to sell on the honor system! My good friend even lost the daffodils along her sidewalk- someone came along with a pair of sissors and just cut them off and took them! Pretty low, huh? I mean, it's not like they were desperately hungry and stealing food!
We aren't having the winds you are, but we're getting snow at the moment. Hopefully the last for the season!
Morning everyone. Happy Palm Sunday. This is a work day for us. There is so much to do here outside today because it is to rain again tomorrow and be colder. It is now only about 45 deg. and windy here again, but nothing like yesterday. I cut daffies about 8 a.m. and put them down on the road stand, then I put the cemetery arrangements back in the barnyard stand. They are too expensive to make to let them steal. And I have had some things stolen.
Our farm is very close( about a mile down the road) to the McGuire AFB and Ft. Dix and we have alot of military people use this road plus the people who work at the bases. They have over the years gotten used to the road stand and years ago we sold produce but that got crazy. I sometimes have things missing and only half the money there. Next day, the rest of the money arrives. They obviously are coming home from groceery shopping of something and have no money left, so they pay half today and half tomororow. It is o.k. because that is the least I can do to say Thank You for Serving our Country.
One day last year some kids stole an entire bucket plus the flowers in it. I was so mad I went up and down the road to see if I could find my bucket. I did not mind them taking the flowers if they wanted them that badly, but I wanted my bucket back. Never found it. Everyone was hysterical because I was so mad about by bucket. Problem was, it was especially fixed with chicken wire to hold the bunches just perfect in the water and that is why I was so angry. I hate smart A kids. They should be out playing soccor or baseball instead of stealing my bucket. LOL Never did find it.
Talk later. JB
I hear you JB.
Several years ago when I lived in Seattle, we used to go out to the farm country nearby and one family had corn on their porch with a jar for the money. We always put the money in, but there was always more IOUs in there than money. I am sure they were from the local neighbors.
It was very nice, and convenient. There are also small produce stands that people have things like cucumbers, lettuce, corn, etc. and on the honor system. It is cheaper to lose a few things I guess than someone sitting there all the time.
Jeanette
Hi everyone, I followed you home, can you keep me. Please please. LOL Actually I just wanted to check in. I will be MIA for a while. My mom had a heart attack friday and I have and will be at the hospital most of the time. I will try to check in when I can. I just don't know how many chances I will get for a few days. I wanted to snap some photos of my garden for all those who can't see spring yet. My azaleas are at their peak. Hopefully I will take some shots and post later. See ya around. Linda
IBARTOO, Prayers for your family and your Mother. God Bless. Keep us posted. JB
Kathy, Lee and Jill, your bead plants cuttings have had a bath in Dawn and warm water, they have been sprayed with Neems and soap, they are now sitting in water wrapped in paper towels. Resting...LOL They will be put into their little boxes in the morning and taken to the USPS for their trips to your houses. I am sending them with my love and I hope you enjoy them. Do Not Let your animals eat any of the beads. They are poison if ingested as many plants are. I learned so much about poisonous plants when I bred birds because I had so many of both. LOL I have never had a bird die of eating the spider plants and yet they are supposed to be poison to birds. Hmmmmm makes you wonder if those who make these decisions know what they are talking about. I do feel I need to at least mention it. They are cute and round and bouncy and cats and dogs love to chase them. So, be warned. Please let me know when you get them. They should be there before the end of the week. In fact 2 or 3 days is what the USPS tells me. ENJOY.JB
Linda, so sorry to hear about your mother. How is she doing now? Fine I hope. Would love to see the azaleas blooming. I had so many in Seattle, but they can't make it here.
You take care, and stay with your mom.
Jeanette
Linda: you and your mom are in my prayers. Please take the time to be with her. everyone here I believe feels the sam as I do. we will all be here when you are ready and your mom is feeling much better.
Dave
Linda I hope things go well with your Mom. Take good care of her . Blessings and prayers for both of you.
Linda, My Prayers are with you and your Mom. Hope all is well and a speedy recovery is prayed for.
JB thanks for the bead plant, wish I could send you something in return, if you want donkey tail or the other one I described, just let me know. They are time consuming to start, but they do it very slowly. I have no seeds left as I sent them to AreJay, but there is always next year. Maybe by then I will have something you would like.
Linda, how is your mom today?
BTW, you asked about my Confederate rose in one of your posts, well it didn't make it. I am sorry it didn't. Maybe next time.
Jeanette
This is another day of unsettled weather so I am taking the time trying to identify one of my begonias. Please take a look at this everyone and tell me where to go to ID this baby. I raised it from a slip someone gave me and it is about two feet tall. I keep cutting slips and now I have a few I would like to sell but I have NO NAME for it. Please point me in the right direction. I put a post on the begonia list but it seems there are more unidentified begonias than there are identified. LOL Someone who works for me said it was an angelwing, but what kind. I hate when people don't give you names. This happens because they pick up plants at Lowes or Home Depot and they have no tags on them. Any ideas please.
Ahhh...this one I know.... I think its called craklin rose. Its funny how people give names to things ....ummmm I think its a-aaaaahhhh tree yes thats it a tree... LOL..anyway sorry about the silliness. Boy is it windy and cold outside.... How are you feeling today JB? Its been a decent day for me but sadly I did not get a darn thing done. and wow look at the time its nap30.
I have yet to get the mail today. I am expecting boxes so its kind of like christmas. I kind of feel that way when I get a fresh box.
I think its that but there are so many real close cultivars. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/98023/
Dave
Not Cracklin Rosie, she is a red color. I have her and I have one like that one but can't remember right off hand what the name is. Give me some time to geT out to the GH house and I think I can give you a name for it.
Edited to say:
JB
I went out and looked at ine and it says Fannie Munson on it. Mine isn't as big as yours is but it is nice sized. I would take a pic but my little camera isn't working right . Need to buy me a new one.

I have one that looks just like that, but then there are so many that look soooooooo alike. Mine doesn't have a name. I have had it so long I don't even remember where I got it.
Jeanette
It just goes to show how important proper tags are. I earned the hard way this spring as a bunch of py popscickle sticks faded or broke off an are lost.
Dave
Yeah I know there are a bunch that looks alike it is hard to tell sometimes, but with the way the leaves are shaped and the size of it was what made me say Fannie Munson. I have another one that looks that way too but it is called Medora, and the leaves are just a little different on it. If you could have them setting side by side you could see the difference in them.
If you could find hcmcdoyle he could tell you most likely for sure because he does the begonia thing and is big on it.
The DG Tree and Shrub Identification said it was a Begonia deliciosa but does not know the common name. Now I must look that up. the Cracklin Rose has perfect little dots on the leaves, my leaves are not all dots, there are some long markings too. Will be back. JB
Morninjb: there sure are a lot of brgonis
Its back to bed catch you l8et
Nor is it like the one I was telling you about ,the Fannie Munson. I just wish I could get a pic for you of the Fannie Munson.
I bet you're thinking of something else, FF - when I google Fannie Munson I come up with Caladiums.
Y'all got me wondering if mine is labeled correctly... LOL The trader I got it from had it labeled tha so its "my story and I'm stickin to it".
Sheryl: I would buy up as many of the cases of 806's as you can. It seems all the distributors have prices a couple of dollars more than the price you bought them for. Of course they will do better "If I buy by the thousand" geese talk about a life time supply...LOL I did find whats called "Al's flower pouches" for under a buck each.
Dave
FF, B. 'Fannie Moser' is probably what you are thinking of. The unknown begonia may be B. 'Lana'. Home Depot had gobs of cane begonias a couple of summers ago at rock bottom prices - all perfectly grown. The pots were either 8 inch or 10 inch and sold for $4. More than likely all these came out of North Carolina Farms.

Yes hcmc That is it. LOL I am a dummy. Don't know how to read LOL
Dave, did you mean 606's or are you buying 806's?
