Angel White Syringa not doing much

Valley Village, CA

I planted this Angel White Syringa about 3 weeks ago. It has not done a thing and now the leaves are all turning brown. It gets morning sun and a bit of afternoon sun. perhaps a little bit too much water. What should I do to save it?
Thank you.

It's probably a bit of transplant shock possibly combined with overwatering. I suspect you've been getting some warmer temperatures lately which can be a little stressful on newly planted things. You do need to be careful on the watering too--before plants have had a chance to get their roots established sometimes they can't take up water fast enough to keep the leaves from wilting during the heat of the day even when there's plenty of water in the soil. Then the mistake people make is they see wilting and think it needs water and give it some more, and too much water makes it wilt worse and then they give it more, etc and eventually the roots rot. I would use the "finger test" to see if it actually needs water or not--stick your finger down a couple inches into the soil near the base of the plant and see how wet it feels. If it's sopping wet then you need to let things dry out a little before you water again, but if it's feeling dry then go ahead and water. Yours doesn't look like it's in that bad shape yet, so I think if you get your watering corrected it will hopefully recover.
