Stephanotis and Grand Duke Jasmine question

Valley Village, CA

I have a stephanotis planted next to a Grand Duke Jasmine. I planted both of them about a year ago and neither one has changed at all in that time. I live in Southern California and they both get morning sun only.
I think they are both still alive as when I scratch them, I see liquid. Should they be getting more sun? Will afternoon sun be too much? Would they be better in pots with good soil?
Thank you for any help. I bought them for their fragrance and have not had a single flower from either.

As long as they're healthy looking I wouldn't worry that they haven't grown--they're not the fastest growing plants in the world, and many plants take a couple years to really get going (there's a saying...first year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap to describe how some things tend to grow). Same thing for flowering--they may wait until they're a bit better established before they bloom. I grew Stephanotis at my old house in a pretty shady area and it bloomed just fine so AM sun should be fine for it, and I had a Jasminum sambac once too (different cultivar than Grand Duke) and it bloomed fine in morning sun. (Also, unless something has changed drastically since that picture was taken there's no need to do the scratch test--if something has green leaves on it still then you know it's alive without needing to check. It's if something has turned brown and looks dead that you can use the scratch test to tell you if it might still be alive or not)
