Garden photos of '09.....#11

I looked for a, what have you bought thread, and I didn't find it. I had a busy night. Went to the supermarket and got all the kids Easter stuff. Picked up some pretty Begonias and a cute perennial Campanula called Get Mee. Also a couple little mini rose bushes in vases that looked like a bunny and a chic, they are for my girls for Easter. Here's the Begonia

Enough medical and images of me run amok. Here is a picture of my first Narcissus which has been sort of open since March 26th, but the weather has been so lousy that i couldn't get a good picture of it until yesterday when it really looked normal. It is Narcissus 'Gipsy Queen'. I could see some others out today, but I certainly didn't venture out in the down pours. Patti

Patti, you are so lucky to have gotten over that. Sadly, for my Dad, I think he is too old to recover fully. He is 79. Hopefully the damage will not get any worse. He does remember our names and such, but his short term memory is really bad, and gets confused easily. Also he thinks it's okay to try and do things he did when he was younger, and he can't be convinced that it would not be a good thing (like riding a bike, I can just imagine how that would turn out!).

Thanks, Meredith.

What a luscious looking begonia, Meredith. We do have a 'what have you bought' sort of thread. Here's a link: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/968689/

I love that daf and the crocus the white ones are great. I have my new purple ones I planted in fall budding and so far two are white. Now I need more because they look lonely.

A couple of days ago there was talk of waterfalls. Well my dh was showing me some of his work he had on his camera from last year. He is trying to get a remodeling business going and as of now is still working for someone else full time. This is a huge waterfall he built with a laborers help, on to the clients existing pool. The spa is at the very top. He said this was before it was washed out and that's why there is white stuff.

Wow - gorgeous, Meredith!

Great begonia and wonderful crocus shots.

I had no idea lyme can get that bad...

love that begonia Meredith

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

wow lyme can be bad, glad you are a healthy case study patti - i get ticks all the time - to my knowledge they are the larger ones and not the little deer ticks that are hard to see - last year they changed the pills you take - it went from 10 days of pills to one - no one told me and i was calling the doctor

so far tick free this year

Do you still have the tick Victor

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Meredith, Great water feature. Oh, to hire a professional and spend some bucks! That is a gem of an example.

Wha, I put on a good front. Dh still chimes in when I start making little to no sense. "Tick Thing". I have gotten re-infected many times since, but I no longer freak out. I know I can pop a pill and the Lyme spirochetes will be wiped out soon. I wish they could develop a pill to wipe out my dang cold. I still feel sick from when I came home with it on the 16th of March. The sun was out, but now gone, which I thought would help me if I could get outside and get some rays.

Victor, You asked about the blooming time of reticulated iris.. This patch (not an individual bulb) started on March 12th (close up) and was still in bloom on Weds, April 2nd. I think this one could be 'Harmony' It is planted in full sun. I have only had it for 2 seasons, so we shall see if it spreads. Patti

I love that Crocus Herald, Patti. It looks like the foliage was nibbled away. Do you have bunnies to go with those deer perhaps?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Yes, we have some bunnies who eat there way into the deer fenced part of the yard and do some damage. We have had so much rain, that the spraying has not been very effective so far. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Patti

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Glad you liked the waterfall. The yards that have natural elevations are always the best for putting in great water features. Our yard is pretty flat, so ours isn't going to be anything like that - but it will still be cool. When it's done I'll show pics. Our stuff always gets put on the back burner - so I am not sure when it will be finished. Keep asking dh when he will start, but i'm not getting a straight answer lol. I need him to finish it so I can finish planting out there.

Karen, I'm so sorry to hear about your dad and dealing with that crud. It sounds as if he's handling it as well as anybody possible could. which is really good I guess. But, it's still tough to watch.
$15. for a double hellebore of any color than white, is actually a pretty decent price.... sorry to say! But, at least you know that you weren't ripped off!

Patti, that's aweful that you have had to deal with that nasty stuff. Just aweful. Do you use a repellant when you're out in the yard? I'd be curious to know what your brand of choice was? But, it sounds as though you've managed this as well as anybody possibly could. I was bit with a tick with Lyme about 2 years ago and went on some really strong antibiotics that caused a sun sensitivity. By the time that they figured it out that I couldn't even sit near a window...I already had these 'sun burn spots" (real term is too long) on my eyes. they'll never go away, although they are better. Anyhow, you've made me realize that I need to thank my lucky stars that it wasn't worse. Anytime I'm getting agitated with my eyes bothering me, I will remember that I was lucky!
What makes it even worse though is, as you were saying, even once you're ever it... you're always a carrier of it, so the slightest little thing can retrigger it. Which seems so unfair that you would have to keep dealing with it over and over again.
And Wonderful Pictures too! I love that crocus Herald!

Sharran, It's great to see here and to see that you have signs of spring going on as well!

Meredith... that waterfall and rockery is wonderful! The begonia is really pretty too!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Redchic01, that sun sensitivity that you got sounds way worse than any I ever got. Sun spots must be very annoying. I once went out in a covered boat, thinking that would be OK while on the meds. However the refection from the water bounced up and burned me good, even though I was sitting way inside the boat. But no trouble with my eyes ever. I pretty much just cover up, wearing long pants, socks and long sleeved shirts year round when working in the garden. Occasionally I go without a long sleeved shirt, but that is rare. I get itchy when I use repellents, so I don't. Wish I could.

I don't buy the school of thought that once you have had Lyme that it stays and lurks in your system. When they did the spinal tap, they could count them, I saw them in slides, but after treatment, they were gone. Plus my memory started to return and I could get out of bed and begin to function again. Each time that I have found a tick attached to me, I have known with in a couple of weeks if I was re-infected or not. My body told me. Now I don't wait to feel ill, I just get a big blast of medicine and in a couple of weeks I am back to normal or as near as I ever am.....no jokes anyone. I do have Fibromyalgia now, but that is now way better now that I am taking Lyrica. The last 2 years have been remarkably better except when it is cold and damp. Not been happy these past few weeks. But I am heading outside to do some digging and to see what else is up. I can see a patch of blue. Patti

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

WOW you guys. I've been re-entering the perennial co-op.
Missed a lot I see.
Plus horrible winds last night and all daytoday 30 mph, knocked out the internet.
I've been in DG withdrawal but everything is OK now.
Sorry about the ticks, they are awfull.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Patti - what a terrible experience you went through with lyme! I am so happy for you that you have recovered.

Karen - so sorry to hear that your Dad has been so seriously affected by lyme as well. You are a wonderful daughter, by the way!

Lovely blooms, Everyone!!!

I know Victor dislikes these, but I have to share my pretty Brug blooms this morning with the rest of you. The plant is just loaded and these look so pretty to me!!

Ticks.
Donniebrook, those brugs are amazing.

I have lots of new blooms out today and we got more of the big new Japanese Maple bed dug. I am exhusted, but happy. Glad to see you back Ge1836. Comcast e-mail was out here today, but not the internet. We have been blowing a steady 25 and gusts have been much higher. But we had some sun today. Tulips and Narcissus are starting to bloom. Narcissu 'Feb. Gold' and 'Small Talk' and tulipa Showwinner' and 'Early Harvest'. Patti

Last group, more reticulated iris. I had 3 new cultivars out, but it was too windy to take good shots of 2 of them. The one new one in this collage is one called Iris reticulata 'Alida' in the upper right corner. Patti

Gorgeous, Patti!!! I especially love your reticulated iris's! That "Alida" is a lovely color.......but then, they are all so pretty! How nice for you to have some color beginning!!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Ohh Patti your flowers look great.
Yep snowrain,35mph wind lotts 0 clouds and alround a day I stayed inside.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Shelly and Louise, for the condolences. Louise, I'm not as good a daughter as I wish I was. I don't have the patience I need with him.

Oh, nice waterfall, Meredith!

Shelly, I do have a name for that hellebore. I had forgotten, but the tag is still there with it. It's a "Southern Belle Strain'.

Wow! The Lyme stories keep getting worse and worse. How awful! I hope I never get it, but we do have plenty of those ticks here, so I feel it just may be a matter of time.

Don't know why Victor doesn't like Brugs. I love them.

Nice spring bulbs, Patti!

In spite of the wind I got a lot done today. Got some beds cleaned out and finished cleaning out my sales areas. Ordered 4 yards of wood chips and 2 tons of rock for stepping stones for the gardens. Those will be delivered Monday.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Gw1836, sorry for your lousy weather. I think we may have a decent day tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

I have 36 big holes to dig for Hamamelis, Ilex verticillata and some Viburnums aside from the 14 Japanese maples I need to plant next week. I will have to amend the soil for each of those holes. The yard is going to look like Swiss cheese. I have to put together cages for many, as the rabbits and deer will eat them, no matter what the list say they don't eat. THEY CAN"T READ! But I just want some nice weather to be outside in. Patti

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Karen, dear........you are just human - like the rest of us. Don't we all wish we had more patience for so many reasons? My Mom had Alzheimer's and I understand just how you feel, but you need to give yourself credit! Perfect Daughter is not the standard.....I still vote for wonderful daughter!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

LOL, Patti! And by the way, your endless stream looked just great on another thread I was reading last night. I had to go before I could post any comments. I remember when you were working so hard on it........it turned out to be fantastic!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Louise.

Karen

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Donniebrook, Thanks, I need to do some cleaning around the stream soon, as the bulbs are starting to pop. I am hopeful that it will look more settled this year. But it has been a joy. Thanks to SongofJoy and shihtzumom who were my guiding gals and inspiration to tackle it. I would love to have the mass and color around part of it that I have seen in photo's by Victor or his pond. DG people are so helpful. You must be excited to get home soon to a repaired house, that you can just enjoy this year. Patti

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Yes, it will be nice to get back to the farm, but the "put back together" still isn't completed. The screened porch where we eat all of our meals needs to be rebuilt and we still have an unfinished guest room with no bed yet. We also have a summer with lots of commitments already between weddings, class reunions, family gatherings, etc., so we may wish we were back down here!!! I'm wondering when we'll fit in getting the vegetable garden in! I can't imagine not being retired!! Too busy to work! LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Congrats on the tulip, Sharon! Looks great.

Did not save the tick, Sherrie. They don't check them around here for lyme.

Karen - I don't like the scent of brugs at all. And they're prone to bugs.

Patti - that's a great stretch for the RI - I'll have to get that one. Thanks.

South Hamilton, MA

Don't worry about checking for Lyme, just squash them. DH had it as a boy, not named then, just results known as Montauk knee. Current Dr. said not in that time period. sorry Doc, the ticks were there even though the Lyme name was not.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Victor, I'm really surprised that they wont test the tick there for you. Most places around here will test if you request it. And/or they will tell you to keep it for several weeks and if you have any signs at all, they'll test the tick. Especially since they know that catching it early with antibiotics can save you a lifetime of grief!

Karen, I agree with others. If you are doing what you can do for them with good intentions, you are a wonderful daughter! Everybody has days and everybody needs days of their own! Thanks for the name on that hellebore! I really like it.

Wow Patti! you have a lot of digging to do! good luck with all of that. However, it's going to look great!! I love those collages, especially how well color coordinated they are.

DonnieBrook.... pretty brug!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Morning RC!
DonnieBrook what a summer you will have.
Patti I cant imagine all those holes. we wont have gardening temps for another few days and snow/rain predicted for Tuesday. BUT
