A coming change to our monetary system

As we enter the second year of the Second Great Depression, I've been watching closely the declining value of the dollar. I'm noticing that as we do business here, our dollars aren't stretching as far as they used to. Bandwidth and server space is getting more expensive, and it costs more to feed my family. Unfortunately, charging more dollars for the services we provide at DG is not the solution, as everyone else is in the same situation we are.

Therefore, starting next week, all orders placed through DG will no longer be denominated in dollars, but will be based on a barter system. When you go to renew your subscription, you will not be given a fixed price in dollars, but you will be given a text area where you will type in what goods or services you think the subscription is worth.

An example might be:

5 quality square bales of hay for one year subscription.

Or, perhaps:

A 1/2 ounce gold coin for a tier 5 subscription to PlantScout.

Once you enter your bartering terms, my sophisticated program will match your proposal with the open commodities market and make a decision on whether to accept your offer or not. If the system is unable to determine a fair value for your proposal, then it will be placed into a queue where Terry or myself will review it.

We may also accept silver, farm implements, livestock (chickens, cattle, goats, hogs, etc), eggs, grain (wheat, barley, corn, cowpeas, etc), ammunition (.223 or .308 preferred), or garden weeding services.

The only thing we will no longer accept is dollars, as we already have plenty of firewood around here to continue to heat our homes.

I hope this change will be a welcomed one!

Dave

April Fool's. Had me wondering for a minute. Good one Dave.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

About time, I was looking for it!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm not so much into the livestock (suburbs), but I AM willing to trade for labor. Now that both boys are in college, mowing this 1.25 acres is getting to be a bit much for DH. Neither DD or I have a lot of expertise on the big mowing machine (tell the truth, we're a little scared of it), so we're definitely willing to work out a mowing-for-subscription swap ;o)

(Zone 1)

^_^

I am so gullible ... was beginning to ponder what I could trade for my DG subscription! Happy April Fool's Day!

LOL!

I look forward to this every year.

Good One!

Hey Joan, I love the state of Tennessee (especially the mountains) and I'd definitely trade mowing your 1.25 acres for a subscription! I have a small riding mower that I've been using for years and I think I could take lessons for driving the BIG machines, although ^_^ my DH would probably warn you against that, or tell you to put padding around things you didn't want me running in to! I am a careful automobile driver but I do have a tendency to be a not so good lawn mower driver!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

ammunition would go pretty far as far as bartering goes these days (even beyond April 1)
;)

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Wonder what a bushel of tomatoes would get me?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Lin, I'm in the flat part of the state (no county is flatter than mine), and I think Joan is snowed in up in North Dakota. Less mowing up there, though ;o)

Where did this thread come from? I didn't authorize this. What in the world is going on around here?

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

ROTFL. You got me good a few years back when you announced that D.A.V.E was really an AI program (not a person) and DG was a research program. I was actually very disappointed at that time to learn that the research program was nearing an end. I had become quite fond of DG and was most disheartened to think that it might end. When I found out that the whole D.A.V.E story was just one of Dave's April Fools Jokes I was both delighted to know that DG would continue after all and embarrassed by my own gullibility.

So today I came to this Forum just to see what kind of prank Dave had thought up. I love it.

I would like to send you about a dozen raccoons. That's one per month (for my renewal), so I think it should be a fair offer. Most of them are pretty well behaved as long as you give them a cookie now and again. I have an over abundance of the little masked criminals at my house, so I think I can spare them.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Yep snowed in and nearly surrounded by water at the same time. Some is flowing and some is just hanging out in places it shouldn't be. Like in houses. Our basement is getting a good washing.

I have tons and tons of snow to barter with, and if someone needs water, I can come up with mega gallons of that too.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Melody,
Don't you be giving those tomatoes away.

Y'all are so bad.

(Zone 1)

Terry, Oops ... yep, it does say Terry right there next to your post! LOL. You probably wouldn't want this absent minded "older" blonde mowing your property. Knowing me, I would get to mowing, and depending on how much gas a big mower holds, I might end up in the mountains of Tn! ^_^

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

oooooh

you funny

I thought of ya'll early this morning getting ready for work.

"Geez. Wonder what kinda bullhooey Dave's gonna try to blow on us this year..."

You never disappoint

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Boys, I was sweating for a moment there. It IS a long way from here to Tx. to offer my gardening service in exchange for my subscription to DG. lol.

(Zone 1)

Joan, I've never been to North Dakota, it's so amazing to think some areas are still getting snow when we've been in the mid and upper 80's the past few weeks! We are very dry here and the humidity has been low which makes it very pleasant, but at the same time it's made the danger of fires more prevalent. I sure wish you had a way of sending some of those flood waters down south to douse some of the fires around the state. We did finally get some much needed rain yesterday but are still about 7" below normal in my county and still under fire watches in some areas. Supposed to rain for the next few days but so far, just cloudy out.

edited to add: Speaking of mowing, I better head out and try to get at least the front yard mowed before it does rain!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I would like to offer several pots each of Clerodendrum bungei, Ruellia tweediana, Liriope minor, Hedera helix, and Cyperus esculentus. Think of how lush and beautiful your garden will be!! And there is plenty for Terry and Melody, too, so I won't be leaving anyone out.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

You're too kind Marilyn....

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

hehehe :) Although it's a thought, ya know? :)

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Finally----- a place to trade in our fire ants.

Ann

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Mm fire ants, high protein food supplement, and spicy too!!
Happy April 1!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Dave, that was so believable!! Good one!

Scutler, ROTFL!!!

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Oooh, Marylyn and Dea, great ideas!

I have a plethora of things like Japanese honeysuckle, wisteria, and other assorted, totally out of control invasives, and there is never a shortage of fire ants around here. Got some nice Japanese beetles and grubs, too.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Hey, hey, hey...this isn't a white elephant drop-off point! No fireants or invasive plants, please!!!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Well I have an excess of squirrels looking for a good home.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I see we have finally found out the full extent of the conficker worm--tends to be a concentrated effect around unwanted pests and invasive plants.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Did someone mention that they wanted a boxful of Conficker worms for their compost pile? Today happens to be the right day to acquire those, too - wonder what their trade-in value is?

(Zone 1)

No invasive plants or fire ants? Hmm ... how about Alligators? Or, if you're in need of extra squirrels I could trade a boatload of those cute but pesky critters!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Humm, could we get a special deal Plantladylin, if we combined our excess squirrels?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I've got some gophers I could throw in! LOL

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey, and how about some stray cats? There are a bunch wandering around the neighborhood and they all seem to think my garden is their litter box. (grrrr) I could trap a bunch of them and send them to you to help with the squirrel and gopher problem you're about to have. ^_^

(Zone 1)

Abbisgranma: I like that idea ... Squirrels have been digging up and eating my bulbs this spring and I had two beautiful baskets of geraniums, and a basket with epiphyllum oxypetalum hanging in a tree in the backyard that the squirrels devoured! I should have learned my lesson ... last year I hung about 2 dozen orchids in that same tree and many of them went missing from their baskets! I was finding labels and spaghnum moss all over the ground under the tree, sometimes finding bits and pieces of the orchids but some entire orchid plants went missing, all that was left was the orchid bark and moss lying all over the ground! I figured the squirrels were wanting to decorate their nests or something. We've been in our house for 34 years and I've never had problems with squirrels like this. So, as much as I love the antics of those cute, furry critters ... I'd love to trade a bunch of them away! I could throw in an armadillo or two also ... they seem to like to dig in my yard occasionally, but that usually means there are grubs or something in the lawn that they like to eat!

Years ago, I fed bunches of stray cats in the neighborhood ... opossums would come at night and eat any cat food that was left in the bowls. One time I was up about 3 a.m. and looked out the front window and a mama possum with 3 tiny babies was eating dry cat food. I guess critters gotta eat too and if there are free meals available they will take advantage of it!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Gee, I was looking forward to neon pink again! NOT.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Thanks Dave, to funny!

dmj, that's if you can find some ammo :) stock on store shelves is pretty slim.

I remember back to Katrina, one man who stayed behind in the French quarter to protect his place, to funny, he had stock piles of liquor and cigarettes as his "cash" and he said people were cleaning up his place for it to.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Got me...I was figiring I was out of luck!!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Plantladylin,Oh then lets make ours a better offer then maybe I can arrange to get some help in my yard. Lawn services around here certainly aren't interested as they don't even return calls . A bundle deal, excess squirrels, an armadillo that is the largest I have ever seen, and possums. Wonder what we could get for that group?

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

...I've been waiting for the "big" announcement for today.

(good one, but I don't think you'll ever top off the mind reading keyboard announcement)
