getting cuttings from tree/shrub to grow?

Austin, TX

My daughter on her way to work has been admiring a small scrub/tree.
She lives in Dallas,tx.
I told her we could probably take a small cutting and perhaps transplant it.
What is the best way to do this so we are successful?

thank you,
Anita

Here's a site that should help:

Take a medium size branch/twig about 8 inches long. Strip the leaves off the bottom half and put it in a pot of potting mix. Keep the mix slightly moist but not soggy. Keep in the shade. If new growth appears at the tip, it is rooting. Don't tug on it; that will break off any fine roots that may be forming. After a significant amount of new growth appears, move to a larger pot and gradually into the sun (assuming the mother plant is in the sun). Then plant in the ground.

The link above came up "page not found" for me. Does anyone else have any info or links on this topic. I am trying to take cuttings from my pyracantha and they seem to dry out of me and lose their leaves as soon as I put them in dirt. Is putting them in the shade crucial for getting them to produce some roots?

When they begin to dry, add water. Cuttings take better in bright shade than in sun.

Some cuttings do better with a plastic bag pulled down over the cuttings and pot and left loose at the bottom.

Thanks for the help. soive2000 might also try some rooting hormone powder in addition to the other tips mentioned.n
