What is the true definition of an heirloom plant? The best answer I've gotten in my own searching is that it is an "old, established variety." Surely there are more rules than that. That description is highly subjective. And must a plant go through a review process to be declared an heirloom? If so, by whom?

The way I understand it is it's a variety that has been around for a while and is open-pollinated http://davesgarden.com/guides/terms/go/447.html
