Am I being cheap, or is there a good way to preserve these indoor holiday time bulbs for next year? Bulbs can be so hard to keep track of---before I know it, they're trying to grow in some bucket under the stairs. My faves are the tiny daffs that sometimes go on clearance at the end of their prime. When I plant them out, they are a wonderful surprise for next spring, and earlier than anything else, too. Paperwhites, tho, will just melt away or disintegrate in this PNW climate.
Still wondering about paperwhites, and now, amaryllis.
Plant amaryllis out in your garden in the summer and give it both water and fertilizer - you want those leaves to feed the bulb, then around August or so bring it in - you don't want it to go through a frost - place on a shelf - your bulb should start to throw out a bloom stalk. http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/468/
The only thing I have ever seen regarding Paperwhites is to plant them out into the garden. This would only be for certain zones - these are very tender (apparently they dont' like your zone any better than they like mine). http://www.willowcreekgardens.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=30
I too plant my hardy bulbs out in the garden after they flower. I also try to hit the $1 shelf in places like Lowes and HD, where they will put these pots of bulbs after flowering. I have found the little Tet-N-Tet dafs, tulips and a host of other types of bulbs for not a lot of money - they just go right into the garden.
