HOLY MACARONI !!!!!
What have you ordered for spring 2009 - Part 6
just WOW looks like my lists from a dozen nurseries.
The fun part is then planting them. I've done some new ones this year, but a good portion have become standards as they sow, germinate and grow well and therefore have earned permanent places in my garden.
are you going into business - wow!
LOL - no. It saves me a ton each spring. For example - Yellow Zowie Zinnia - 3 for $19 if purchasing a plant versus $3.50 for 10 seeds.
Anitabryk2, That is a great collection. I love all the digitalis you are growing. and that will be quite a show with the annual zinnias.
I have just finalized a ridiculously large order that includes a mountain of Ilex verticillata, some viburnums ( 1 Viburnum x pragense and V. 'Conoy' , and some nice colorful Hamamelis that inclue these. I better get digging.
Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Diane’ (red)
Hamamelis virginiana ‘Harvest Moon’
Hamamelis virginiana 'Mohonk Red'
Hamamelis virginiana 'Champlin Red'
Hamamelis x intermedia 'Aphrodite'
Hamamelis x intermedia 'Pallida'
Hamamelis x intermedia 'Rubin'
Hamamelis x intermedia'Rochester'
a while back there was talk here of the redbud covey lavender twist a weeping form - found them pretty inexpensive here - don't know how big they are probably small

HOLY TOLEDO Anita is a WS QUEEN!!!
I agree, I am amazed at her list. I tried for two winters and failed with most things. This year my indoor sowing has been bad too. I may give up on most seeds except veggies and big easy ones. Patti
I'm getting my 'covey' on Sat. at Fairweather's open house. I ordered it a while ago to be picked up at their Open House. Hopefully somebody will take a pic of it for me so we can post it here. Then we can see if it was worth it. I am sooo excited!
Jan23, I can't wait to see what you got in person compared to what I got in the mail. I didn't order anything big, so I didn't expect more than I got. I want that redbud, Ceris 'Forest Pansy', but that is now on the next years list. I think your weeping C.'covey' will be beautiful. I did order a Viburnum plicatum f. tom. 'Weeping Magic' from them. It is not yet big enough to weep. I would love to see a picture of a big one. Patti
Recieved my Fairweather order today---the plants are really large & lovely. I ordered JM 'Kasagiyama', clematis 'Walenburg', & penstemon 'Sunburst Amethyst'. This was my 1st order from them, & I will definitely order from them again. Patti---loved that list of witch hazels----not too many are hardy here---mostly the yellow ones. Anita---can't believe that order! I'd love to see that penstemon when it blooms.
Great to hear, Robin. Not surprised at all.
I loved the witch hazels too... till I saw the prices
:)
Anita, and I thought I was crazy, I'm dizzy from looking at your list! LOL I'm pleased to report the seeds I sowed from last year's blooms of Digitalis 'Milk Chocolate' made it through the winter! I really loved the flowers and now my one lonely plant will have company this year :)
Patti, my back hurts just looking at your lists :( LOL
It looks worse than it is. :) This is my 4th year using this method and I like it and the money it saves me. Especially since I enjoy all the annuals/biennials.
Wha I added that to my faves! I am going to see if I can go there and check that out! It has to be small, because I saw a really nice one last spring at a nursery and if I remember correctly it was at least $600 probably more.
There is a prennial co-op going.
I'm not sure about it as co-ops are new to me.
There were only 2 plants I had any interest in.
meredith be forwarned to bring a limited amount of cash, no credit card - thier hosta's literally jump in car trunks!!
they are very nice and thier dog is worth the trip alone.
What a set up.
ge1836, Thanks I will need some of those for my new Japanese maple bed.
Anitabryk2, I grew that Yellow Zowie Zinnia from seed last year. It bloomed on very late for me. Patti
Am debating about another astilbe---I need a white one---any suggestions?
Wha lol thanks for the warning! : )
Robindog, I grow several. Here are the ones that I can recommend, but I have a few other white ones too, Gloria Weiss and Astilbe x arendsii 'Deutschland'. I want to try one called Astilbe x arendsii "Rock and Roll" and a short one called Younique White' Do you have a favorite of any color? How about anyone else?
Astilbe x arendsii 'Bridal Veil'
Billowy clouds of dense, pure white plumes in early summer. Prefers rich moist, well-drained soil but will also grow well in a bog.
Zone: 4-9 Height: 24''
Astilbe x arendsii 'White Gloria',
(24 - 30") Very attractive, blocky, full white plumes bloom over dark green foliage in mid to late summer.
Astilbe x arendsii 'Ellie', I planted this one last year, verdict still out.
Astilbe japonica 'Ellie'
Large, very fat white upright plumes which age/fade to green instead of a tired brown, which means these plants will look more attractive longer in your garden. 24” late June-early July blooming.
I am planting this one this spring.
Astilbe simplicifolia 'White Wings
ASTILBE WHITE WINGS PP#11,961 - Perennial Spiraea - Short 15" - Plant 18" apart. zone 4-8. Extra fluffy plumes of white blushed with pink over dark green compact foliage in July
I really like 'Amethyst' http://www.gorgetopgardens.com/perennials/astilbe-amethyst.html
Very perty.
Dahlianut, Nice one, I don't have it, yet. I am trying a mini one called astilbe perkeo this year from Mason's hollow. Patti
Wow! For $35?? By the way - thanks for the stiff neck!
Nice pot. At least you changed it so I have spasms on the other side of my neck now...
i rotated and saved these - obviously did not take!
At least we can look at the dirt straight.
lol
I just thought they were special Japanese ones that grew that way. Wha I was thinkin. 10 yards makes an end zone. You could have friends over for a football/spreading party ^_^
Leaning a little to the right.
do not know what is wrong it is straight before i send it :)
dnut i prefer to move it myself and my friends have known for a long time come spring stay away - stay far away :)
