What have you ordered for spring 2009 - Part 6

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

That's a prettiful one Cousin Nut. How much sun are you putting it in?

I just got 3 passiflora's.

Celeste you have mail.........

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Jan and cousin Nut! It will be getting mostly shade.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I put a bunch of new babies in morning sun last fall and a big 'purple palace' in half day sun. I hope they don't burn up :/ I guess I can move them quick like a bunny if they start to.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I think morning sun is fine for them. I have seen 'Purple Palace' in all day sun that does well.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Made another large purchase today - and i do mean large - 10 yards of compost that my town sells - stuff is like gold - and 10 yards of top soil - i'll mix them 50/50 - Can anybody spell WHEELBARREL

Have decided to build two new large beds and expand several others - need homes for all the jm's and winter sowing i've done.

Thomaston, CT

Sounds like a plan, Bill---I need to do the same thing, but for iris & DL. Miracle is very nice---I guess it changes colors during the year. My lime rickey doesn't look too great right now---more like lime fried. Sowed some annual poppies & larkspur the other day---now I've got to plant grass in the same place for the umpteenth time--- grows well during the summer, dies off in the winter---and it's only by the driveway----all the other spots filled in fine.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Looks like you'll be busy, Bill!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yes i will - think i'll a little time on my hands:)

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Bill, I know how big that pile is going to be as we had over 20 yards of compost dumped last spring in our drive. You need the same energy it took to build your wall to move that amount of stuff alone. I hired help for that job last year and plan on hiring them again to move the mulch. I hollered uncle. Sun is trying to come out, so I am about to go outside and actually work. Many, many, many holes to dig. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

this is the 4th year in a row of 20 yards of dirt - to be followed by another 20 of mulch - i do it all myself - it's part of my spring wieght loss program

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Consider trying to establish good groundcovers, Bill. Looks more natural and saves lots of time and effort. Mulch is a real pain.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Eat a lot next winter and then come move mine next spring for your "weight loss program". Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

a pain and $$ - maybe should have got more ferns

it's the premium ale's patti one is like a loaf of bread and if i were to have more next year it would not be good:)

South Hamilton, MA

Was away for the weekend & so am far behind just went through these posts. Answer to last thread: The daylily is a semievergreen, gets what looks like spring sickness every year, but recovers. My Klemm order should come this april, so should have the spaces ready. Just a couple of plants.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

WOWSER wha that's alot of work!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I managed on doing a lot of pruning today and more raking, does it ever end? The sun is still out, but my back is done. Many more bulbs out, but I didn't stop to take any pictures, but I did find another clump of reticulated iris that I had forgotten about blooming nicely. Then I did find a lot of disturbed area in a couple of beds where the deer roam. The are digging up something.ggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Bad.

Diana from Topiary garden emailed this morning saying my check had arrived and that because my shipping was less than quoted on line, and plus, she had reduced the price on a couple of things that I had ordered that I now had enough credit to add to my order. She is mailing on Friday so they don't get stuck in the PO over the weekend. Her idea. So I ordered RUBY LACE A very slow growing dwarf dissectum with maroon-red leaves. Holds color well in the summer. Color is different from the other fine dissectums. It is very dark. Great for container plantings. 2ft x 2ft at maturity. Sun/part shade in well-drained soil. Zone 5. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice. What size is it now? Slow-growing and 2 X 2 at maturity usually means pretty small.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

victor i think we have a winner here - i may move my order from Davidsans to topairy gradens - david is taking too long to respond - not the way to start a business i'm going to give him another week or so - i've already asked Diana what she has for the trees i'm looking at.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm anxiously awaiting the first arrival. Guess it will be Patti?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

No, I think Wha will be getting his first. I assume it will be small too. Patti

Quoting:
Maples are sold as one gallon sized material. They are one or two year olds.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

What was I thinking??? LOL Didn't stop there, I rarely order from Van Bourgondien but I saw a Lily named "Debbie" and I couldn't resist :) http://www.dutchbulbs.com/store/lilies/giantlilies/65131 Not crazy about the color but thought it would look nice with 'Landini' http://www.dutchbulbs.com/store/lilies/61477 which I've had on my list, so ordered both! Now I'll just keep my fingers crossed that what I ordered IS what I got :(

Next up an order from Caladium Bulbs 4 Less http://www.caladiumbulbs4less.com/servlet/the-Whites/Categories
All whites - Aaron, Grey Ghost, White Wing

Having read all the wonderful comments about the size of Clematis from Silver Star Vinery I ordered two Clematis to try growing together:
John Huxtable http://www.silverstarvinery.com/vines.asp?letter=J
Purple Spider http://www.silverstarvinery.com/vines.asp?letter=P

Placed an order last week with a company I had never heard of before but he had the Syneilesis palmata I've been looking for! Keeping It Green Nursery http://www.keepingitgreennursery.com/

I have absolutely no idea when I'm going to find the time to get all of these planted but I'm going to try! Vegetables got me started on this 'journey' and I STILL haven't ordered any vegetable seeds! LOL

Good to hear. They always do a great job. I hate those big staples, but they do help.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor, I have to agree with you that mulch is a real pain, in more ways than one. It sure looks nice, but then you have to keep adding and adding, year after year. I have so many other things to do, and with working full time and helping out my sister with our Dad, there is only so much time I have to take care of the gardens. I wish there were more of me to go around!

Nice list, Debbie. I like the lilies you're getting, as well as the clems. Those caladiums look really nice. I have yet to grow them. This year I will be growing a lot of coleus. It will be only my second time growing them, and I really went overboard on ordering. I couldn't resist, there were so many I liked. I am now getting together a collection of containers to plant them in when they arrive.

Karen
