What are the spider web-like things in my bushes?

Dallastown, PA(Zone 6a)

I have these spider web-like things in my bushes and trees... Not everywhere but in certain spots. Are they harmful to my plants? If so, is there something I can do to get rid of them?

Could be webworm, but it's a little early in the season. Please supply a photo.

I agree, a picture would really help. There's always the chance they might really be spiderwebs...in which case I'd leave them alone because spiders don't hurt your plants but will eat bugs that could.

My weeping cherry and blue spruce sometimes get 'spider-web like things' They are bagworms (I don't know if that's the same as webworm) They will damage the leaves of your plants and need to be removed, but like the others said really need a pic...

There's a picture of webworm webbing in the new article on insect damage: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2287/

Great link, Rosemary, thanks! I just figured out it was a grasshopper eating my Harry Lauder Walking Stick! Probably more than one, the leaves were decimated. Now I just have to figure out how to protect my poor plant. By the way, I see those webworms all over the place here in MA, they are creepy, sometimes you can see the things inside moving....ugh!

YUCK! That is NOT what I saw LOL... I think what I saw were typical spider webs... I hope I don't find what I saw in that article! Thanks for the info, Rosemary!!

Yuck is right. A few summers ago we were at a friend's lake house and the caterpillars from those things were just dropping on us like rain....I glanced down at my shirt at one point & there were 3 of them on me, I plucked them off & lit off into the house so fast...wouldn't go outside again....ugh! If you ever drive down the Mass Pike you can see them in all the trees....
