Cold Hardy Tropicals

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the feedback. Good idea, I'll not leave all of them in the ground. I have some 'green with envy' jumbos too. It'll be interesting to see if they perform differently than the other jumbos.

OK, my two cents which is really less than a penny. For two concentrated years I have been planting "tropicals". Plants that are by nature only supposed to live in zone 10 or 11. I am in zone 8a. This Spring is the real test. RJ, king of the tropicals from zone 9 brought me a "truck load" of trops last spring. They were beyond beautiful all summer and fall. To a plant, every single one died above ground. I am carefully watching and tending to see what comes back from the roots and what does not. I was already covered up with banana and alocasia that are root hardy. I pulled the plumeria up and laid all of them on a shelf in the greenhouse. They are now happily all back in pots and growing again. I cut off parts of each brug above the "Y" as I had no previous experience and did not know what to expect. Well, hallelujah, I have doubled my brugs as the cut part survived in pots and the other in ground is coming back from the roots. All of the bulbs die down and come back every year as do the cannas and crinium.

My take on the information in a "Cold hardy tropical" thread would be much like what I have posted. As the days roll by I will know more about what made it and what didn't.
Maybe "root-hardy tropicals" would be closer to the need.

Just a thought. I am a zone pusher big time. If I want it, I want it and can't be talked out of it. I think RJ had a good time feeding my addiction and he is coming back for another long visit soon. If his gifts don't all leaf out, I will get more and pot new starts in the fall.

Sorry, not trying to stir the pot.

Christi, I f you find that RJ brings you too many, you can always send some of them up my way? We'll push that zone up as far as we can.

Hey guys. If you are interested, I started a cold hardy tropicals thread within the tropical plants forum! Please jump on in if you are!

Gastonia, NC(Zone 7b)

Post a link to it here, why dontcha? You'll get more traffic that way I imagine. ;-) And, thanks!

Kyla

I would love to, but you are talking to a novice. I don't know how! Can you tell me how?

Gastonia, NC(Zone 7b)

I'll sure try!

Go to your thread, to its first post, and then go up to your browser's address bar, select the URL, copy it, and then come in here and paste it in your next post in this thread -- then everyone can just click on it and go to your Cold Hardy Tropicals thread.

If you can't figure this out I'll do it for ya...... once you learn it's real easy.

O.k. Here I go!

Call me stupid, but I can't figure out where to click on copy. The only place I can find it is in the edit section, but it is not highlighted as a selection.

Right click on your mouse to see the word copy, come back here and start a reply. Right click on your mouse and hit paste. Some pcs have a copy this link hit that and then come back and paste it here.

O.k. Going to try again!

Smarty pants! Ha! ha! I am glad you did that 'cause right clicking my mouse did not yield me a copy selection. I was totally lost!!!! Now I feel dumb.

Thanks to all of you that supported me.And to the ones that didn't,whatever. We tried.I am too tired and burned out to sweat the small stuff.I started this thread to see if it would generate any interest. It clearly did.Labeling the thread "cold hardy tropicals" was supposed to be an attention getter. Most of you got it.In retrospect I should have called it "zone pushers".I still think its a good idea.Dave's Garden Administration, clearly disagrees. They are the final word.I can respect that.Take their advice and ask your questions or start your threads in the tropical plant forum.Bombard it.Take the forum over.Crowd out the others.LOL.It is the only way this "zone pusher" forum would be reconsidered.I am trying to have the last word here.As far as I am concerned this thread is CLOSED.D mail me anytime if you want to discuss this topic.NO MORE,NO MORE.THIS THREAD IS CLOSED.Regards,Edge

Me too. I love tropical plants, but have a hard time finding which ones will or won't survive in my zone. Edge says this thread is closed, but I'm posting my yes vote anyway.

No reason to close this thread. There are still lots of us eager to learn what will grown where we are told .....No way.

Actually, we just moved. I started a cold hardy tropicals thread in the tropical plants forum. You guys are welcome there.

Here is a link to one of several discussions in May of 2007 leading to the Tropical forum. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/710770/ It takes a bit of patient sustained interest to get a new forum.
