Interesting garden "visitor"

Conroe, TX(Zone 8b)

Yesterday after a huge downpour and hail I went and checked on my garden I had just planted last weekend (strawberries, tomatoes and pepper plants...I also put in parsley, carrots and pepper seeds too) and to dig a small trench to help the water drain (the bed is slightly raised). I then noticed that there was a crawdad (crayfish) about the size if my thumb (from the end of my thumb to where it joins the hand) swimming around in the water (we've had about 2 inches of rain in the last few days). I picked him up with my shovel and relocated him to another area in my yard...hubby says I'm too humane. Anyone know if they are bad for gardens or should I just let him be??

Don't they need some sort of pond or a creek to live in for part of the time ?
That's cool that you saved the little guy !

I have seen mole crickets come out of the grown after a hard rain.

I also have seen minnows in street puddles after a big rain.

Crawfish won't hurt your garden. They are sure good eating!!

Thanks.......I did a little research about them, found out that if you live close to a roadside ditch in the wetland meadows that they will build little burrows there. So I guess I'll just leave the little guy alone....looked at the garden again this morning and looks like he or another crawfish is rebuilding there burrow. Here's an intresting link of info about the little creatures.

The only thing better than a pound of crawfish is 10# of crawfish. Love those guys!!
