Planting Miscanthus plugs, which way is up/down?

Hollidaysburg, PA

I've ordered Giant Miscanthus grass plugs but do not understand which way is up. None of them seem to have any actual grass. At first I thought roots should point down but then I thought maybe roots grow up to make new plants nearby? Some roots grow straight out from side to side. Also, on some plugs there are these small hard purple pointy things about a quarter inch to half inch long that resemble the back end of a worm. Any info is greatly appreciated! Sincerely, Lisa

The roots will point down. Some might go sideways, but you should be able to rotate the plug in a way that you will see some roots going down, some to the sides, and none pointing up. I'm not sure about the purple pointy things--can you post a picture?

I have Giant miscanthus and although it's a long time since I planted it, I suspect the purple pointy things are new stems. The stems are really thick, like reeds, so a new stem is not a delicate little thing like turf grass has. It's a really tough plant so if you just plant it with most of the roots generally pointing down I would think it would grow just fine. It's slow to get going in the spring but really takes off later in the season.

Thank you ecrane3 and midwest_tyro, your information is very helpful, I'll start planting today! Sincerely, Lisa
