Nigel, check with your local garden center. There are brush killers available that you mix with water and spray on the ivy with a garden sprayer. It may take a few applications as Poison Ivy can be very hard to kill.

wear protective clothing, hand and face, and eye protection when handling it also. Then change your clothes, shoes, etc. someplace they won't be touching your carpeting, furniture, or other clothing. There some body wash soaps that will also help to remove any irritants that may have gotten to your skin. Wash those clothes seperate from your other laundry or if you can, wear something that can just be thrown away when you get finished. How do you plan on disposing of the plants?

Whatever you do, don't burn the stuff you pull out, that vaporizes all the irritating oils and it'll get in your eyes, nose, etc and cause major problems.

if i can find a weedkiller then i wont be takeing the plants up had been told not to burn because of the vapors got to admit that was my first thought but the weed killer seems the best solition this is just the first of my tasks im going to have to start this garden from scratch so will need a lot of help along the way thought joining a site like this was the best way to go will be uploading pics as i go along

It affects people in different ways too. I can pull it up barehanded and very rarely get even an itch. My neighbor I think can just look at it and come down with a rash all over!!! Needless to say I do a lot of his poison ivy removal!

That's pretty nice of you Doug! Can you come up here and pull my poison ivy for me...lol
My stepson is extremely allergic to poison ivy. One little spot ends up covering his whole body and he swells up. He has to take prednisone every time. Poor thing!

Do be careful though even if you're not allergic to it--it is a sensitizer which means if you are repeatedly exposed to it, you can become allergic to it over time even if you initially weren't. So people who aren't sensitive to it should still try and avoid coming in contact with it.

to get rid of the one at my parents house I used double the recomended strenght and it still took to times to get rid of all of it, you spray and wait one month and spray again since you are going to get the seeds germinating it maybe one time per month for a few months be carefull with the stuff where glasses long sleves and long rubber gloves and try to do it when the foliage is dry and it is not going to rain for at least 24 hours

something you may want to think about is using 35 per cent proxide that will kill anything its cheap and you can use it full strenght

I have never reacted to the stuff but I dont push my luck
I grew up playing in the woods with sandles and shorts I am the only one that never had it I was envious lol not anymore hahhahaha

Weed killer called Roundup for Brush, will kill poison ivy and oak. Stated on the label. There are 2 different Roundups so make sure you get the one that kills brush. Walmart carries it but it is not cheap. I killed my Lilac bush with it that someone had planted where it was in the way to get from the front to the back of my house in a 3ft space. I also killed a tree growing 2ft from the foundation with branches that was lifting my roof shingles. Some people don't think ahead when they plant something. Grrr!

Make sure the spray don't hit anything else because it will kill whatever plant it lands on.

yup that right I bought the big jug cost me 38 dollars plus tax since I have hawthorn in the woods that I want gone so I plan to start using it as soon as they leaf
I have to get rid of the stuff since they send out shoots from the root the guy at the garden center told me to start by spraying the outer edge all the way around and wait a month and then do the edge where its still alive further in till I get to the middle of the patche he says its the only way since going only in one direction the roots will go crazy
at the other end and spread out more lol like I need more than the thousands I already have hahhahahahah

I had a horrendous infestation. I was ill and house bound most of last year, and the stuff snuck (is that a word?) in. I had a landscaper level the area it was growing in, shrubs and all. Best $300 I ever spent. Now, I am almost finished ripping the roots up by hand while is it still asleep. Then I plan to nuke the area with Brush Be Gone, cover it with 2 layers of black fabric, and 4 inches of mulch, and leave it fallow for at least a year. If I am very, very, lucky, I might be rid of it. If not, I may have to try drastic measures.

hahahah that is pretty drastic at my first home it was all over all I did was spray it with bleach I think it was like twice over the summer and it was all gone but nothing would grow there for a couple of years oh well I know better now but it did work
