My OH bought me two oakleaf hydrangeas. I have never had any before and know they require a little more care than other plants. Where do I plant it and how do I take care of it?
How to care for Hydrangea
I don't think they need any more care than anything else...the only thing you have to watch out for is that they bloom on old wood, so don't cut them back in fall/winter or else you won't get blooms. It's possible you might need to protect them over the winter in order to protect the buds that are forming from late freezes, but I don't think that's as much of an issue with H. quercifolia as it is for the more common H. macrophylla--hopefully someone else from your area can confirm that. They can handle more sun than some other hydrangeas too, but how much sun they can handle is going to depend on how hot your summers are--the hotter the summer, the more afternoon shade they'd want for best results.
Here's the Plant Files entry...it says hardy to 6a but I know there are people growing them in zone 5 so don't read too much into that. There are some helpful comments on it too so I'd look through those and you may get some other ideas. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/131/
Thanks ecrane-guess I could've looked that up myself, but didn't think about it. I'm glad you mentioned the flowers-I constantly prune everything. Would've been disappointed if I never got any blooms, but I usually don't prune too much in fall so I might have been all right.
