I have reasearched this and read contradicting answers.
I have a jersey berry bush, dug out the tag and it has no info at all...
first year it had lots of fruit, second year it flowered - but no fruit.
Do i need to have several bushes?
Or maybe location? maybe its just adjusting to its surroundings?
blueberry bushes - do you need several to polinate??
Some cultivars are self-pollinating but most fruit best if they have another plant of a different cultivar (that blooms at the same time) for good cross pollination. Jersey is a late-season bloomer so Bluecrop, Elliott or Friendship should be good matches. Also, it doesn't matter how many plants you have if you don't have any bees to do the pollinating so it's a good idea to promote your local bee population by planting other attractors near by.
Thanks , i think i will try relocating the bush and adding a couple of more.
It cant hurt.
Anyone know if i were to relocate it in spring - will it kill the chances of berries for this year?
If it's already flowering, it would be best to wait for fall so you don't lose the flowers or fruits. You can still plant the new blueberry bushes in your desired location (preferably with at least 6 hours of sunlight and slightly alkaline soil) and the bees will still do the job of pollinating, even if the shrubs are planted in different areas of your yard.
I love blueberries, so I'd vote for leaving those and planting more!
The southern variety blueberries I have (Tifblue, Brightwell, Sunshine, Premier) do best in acidic soil, tho I don't know about the Jersey berry bushes. Although US native blueberries are found in the understory, blueberries seem to do well in full sun even in the hot Mississippi climate.
Most of the pollination I see going on right now for us is being done by bumblebees.
