Someone help me please! First home, first front yard!!!

Midland, TX

Hey guys, please let me know what you would do...we have already fixed the grass, this was taken last fall when we closed on the home...but we need something to do with that flowerbed in front of the 2 windows and the ones in front of the brick walkway. Can't really see it, but there's also 2 right on the other side of the brick. We are in Zone 8 and haven't ever done this before! Any edging ideas & plant/shrubbery? anything? Please help!

Ashley, It is hard to give you any ideas when we can't tell the size of the beds. Smokey

I see you have two fairly large trees that will offer shade during the warm months. What direction does your house face? If the front faces north, you will be heavily shaded and will need shade loving plants. If it faces south, you might get a little better light and could grow other types of plants. We will need this info to help us help you :-} I see lots of potential for some very beautiful gardens.

Ooops! We cross-posted Smokey. Yours is a good point too.

Hey guys, thanks for the questions. My house faces North & the flower bed to the right ( in front of the right brick wall is about 10' x 2' and the one on the left is about 30' long and gets wider in front of the two windows. I hope this helps, I'm very new to all this, sorry I didn't put it in my intial post! Thanks for any ideas!!!

You could put a trellis between the two windows and plant Virginia Creeper on it. You have many choises for plants. hostas( there are many kinds), ferns(again many kinds), Impatiens, Coleus, and Cast Iron plant to name a few. Since you are new to gardening I would add Mushroom Compost to the beds. You can mix it in with your existing soil. You can buy it at Walmart or Lowe's. Are you new to this garden site?

Good advice except I'd double check that Virginia creeper--it's very invasive. You could plant a nice, well-behaved clematis instead. Some of them grow well in a more shaded area.

I'm pretty new at this too, but i would make some round flower beds around the base of the trees and put hostas in them. Although you probably just wanna work with what you have now. I love hostas but i can't use them. My backyard is where i would have to put them and i have stupid dogs. lol. keep us posted on what you do!
