tomatoes at different heights under the lights

Jonesville, SC(Zone 7b)

I have some tomato plants that are a good bit taller than others. The plants of varying heights are on the same shelf under the lights. I know that you are supposed to keep the lights 1-2 inches above the plants but this is virtually impossible to do with the shorter plants. They were seeded at the same time; some grew quicker than others though. Is this a major problem? Thanks for any suggestions or insights.

I end up rigging my lights at an angle when this happens, then line up the seedlings underneath by height. Sometimes the lights have to go to almost a 45 degree angle and look very odd, but it seems to work OK. You may have to get creative with how to angle the light set up If your plants are on shelves with the light hooked to the bottom of the shelf above. Hope this helps.

If your plants are in separate containers, you could prop up the shorter ones with wooden blocks or books.

I have the same problem. I am using standard 6x12 standard flats. I cut them up into 3x3 squares so I can shim them up & down individually.

Stack some books or magazines under them to even up, works great! I have a reserve pile of old books I've saved just for this reason.
