Boards over Carrots???

Franklin, KY

Has anyone ever heard about covering newly planted carrot seeds with a board?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I've always sown mine direct and just barely covered with dirt. Never had a problem with them germinating. There are some seeds that require darkness for germination, but usually it's perennials. The board might be a method to deter animals from digging up the seeds, but I don't know.

The basis is to to keep the top of the ground moist so they can germinate. Does not have to be a board, can be cloth or anything that prevents the water in the top inch of soil from evaporating. Yesteryear, folks depended on rainfall, to water thier garden and sometimes the top inch where these seed were would dry out and they would die in the sprout. In these days of hoses and out door faucets, it is not necessary. But in olden days, it was a proven way of ensuring a better stand of beets, carrots, lettuce and the like.

That makes a lot of sense, I hadn't thought of that. It sounds like a great way to conserve water, maybe it can make a comeback. We gotta do something to save our resources....
