Anyone ever used an AeroGarden??

I keep seeing the AeroGardens... They look really cool and I'd love to be able to use it for something... anything LOL! Are they any good?... Are they worth the money?

I always thought they seemed quite expensive.

I've never used it before, but a store by my house had one set up for a couple months. They started new seeds and they germinated but I never seen them grow any. (One lady who works there is a neighbor and she gardens, so not lack of gardening experience.) They eventually took the set-up down, (probably bad advertisement). The pics are probably set-up for business and probably planted with full grown plants. It will keep plants alive and healthy, but I wouldn't count on starting seeds and you could probably do the same thing in a sunny window for free.

My neighbor has one and has lettuce right now that she'll be having for lunch tomorrow.
You might want to research if you can use your own seeds and seed starter without having to purchase theirs($15 for just the lettuce plugs).

Thanks, flowerjen. I really like the mesclun mix, so it'd be nice if I could use my own seeds... I absolutely LOVE DG (I'm a newbie)! You all are so helpful! :)

It would be much cheaper to set up a pot and saucer with a small light above it. I have a shelf on my kitchen rack with an under cabinet florescent above it, lettuce and such grows easily. The pot is a big old chipped ceramic bowl that we drilled for drainage. The saucer is one of the clear plastic things that sell for about a dollar. It is pretty at the same time, about 4 inches deep. I divide it in half mentally, we eat one side while the other side is growing. I don't believe their claims about how much produce can be grown in such a small space, one you pick it and eat it, it takes awhile to get the next batch to eating size. my 2 cents

actually, that advice was worth $150, cathy! LOL... the amount of money i MAY have spent on an aerogarden... so all you used was a typical flourescent light bulb??

I wish I could show you pics of the things I have growing under fluorescents-it's amazing how well the plants will adapt to that light. It's mother nature, you don't need to go high tech.

Yes, the only thing I do is take off the diffuser. I think I paid about $15 dollars for it at Lowes, it is about 2 feet long with one tube (the width of my shelf). Plug it into a timer, it turns on and off. Water now and then, and I give it a bit of diluted miracle grow about once a month, just a little. I like leaf lettuces and spinach the most. Once a year I put in new soil. Unless you keep your house really hot, it should be fine. We are at 65 in the winter, 78 in the summer if the AC is on. It won't grow tomatoes or peppers, not hot enough.
