Grow Lights VS Mini Greenhouse

Somerset, NJ(Zone 6b)

I would be interested to hear anyone's opinions on the use of grow lights vs the cheap plastic zip-up mini-greenhouses for starting seedlings. The temp here right now is the lower 50s and goes down into th upper 20s-lower-to-mid 30s at night. Would my seedlings do better outside in a mini greenhouse in that find of weather (veggies & flowers).

Thanks.

Green -

Have you tried wintersowing? I highly recommend it. Check out the wintersowing fourm.

I have one of those greenhouses - my husband wired it for me with some fluorscent lighting and a couple of power strips. I use it primarily to start cuttings. Pictured are cuttings I received in a trade last fall. The greenhouse works great for cuttings.

I bought a mini greenhouse/seed starter...looks like a little tent. It has been empty during February and March, whereas my kitchen has been overtaken with seedlings. I found that I essentially wasted my money. By the time I could have added heat and lights (both of which would have been essential) I would have spent a fortune and had enough room for about three trays of seeds - which would have been a disaster once I had to transplant them into plastic cups from the jiffy pellets.

I felt like a fool for buying the darn thing. I'm now trying to figure out how to reconfigure my kitchen for next year's "greenhousing" so I still have room to cook - a minor detail I neglected during this year's experimentation.

However, my seedlings turned out GREAT. By the way, unless you already have grow lights, I bought fluorescent shop lights instead. The wavelengths they give up are the ones the seedlings need, and they're only about 20 bucks each.
