when or do I prune a clemitis back. am in zone 4, believe it is a jackamani (sp)
clemitis
Late winter or early spring.
One year I pruned a beautiful flowering clematis the wrong way and it took like 2 years before it started really flowering again. I don't know if it's all clematis or this was just a fluke, but you might want to look into it a little more.
Jackmanii is a pruning group 3 clematis http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/65048/. You want to hard prune it in the spring down to the 2nd node. Bubbles - I am guessing you are in either a zone 4 or 5? I just pruned back all of my type 3 clems about 2 weeks ago and I am in zone 5. You want to get them before they start growing in the spring - you could do it now.
Check out the clematis forum - there is a lot of good information there and a lot of really nice people.
