Ants in my containers!

Rock Hill, SC

What's the best thing I can do to keep red ants from invading my containers of flowers?

I've used pesticed outside in the past, but inside I've done something different. When I would have a problem with ants in the kitchen, I would take dish soap and squeeze a line all around the countertop where it met the wall (or anywhere else I saw them.) It always worked, so maybe you can try something like this with your containers. I would try it on the top of the outside of the pot when it's sunny. (I guess if it doesn't work, at least when it rains your pots will be clean lol)

LOL - thanks for the advice! I will try it!

I had an ant problem in my rosemary. I repotted it, getting as many of the ants as I could out of it. Then I added a thin line of petroleum jelly under the lip of my new container. The ants can't cross it, so no getting back in. So far its worked for me.

A light sprinkling of diazanon on the surface should take care of them.

At your local hardware store (Home Depot), there are ant baits that you can stick in the pot or garden. You get like 10 of them for $5.00. You just stick it in the dirt and the ants go to it, give the food to the queen and then she and the workers dies. I find that they die within a couple of days. You don't have to touch or mix anything. Just stick the plastic baiter in the dirt. It comes in a box, and the name is Mark ant killer or something along that line.

Also Vicks Vapor Rub works great. I put this near my hummingbird feeder and the ants stay away. It's greasy and the smell is strong!
