Spring Bulbs - What's Blooming? III

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I love that dog, Puddy is his name. As to freesias, I don't do well w/ them either.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thank you Hemo :-) Actually I screwed up and must correct myself before you go out and buy - that is "Sorbet" which is a Single Late - though looks a lot like the "Rembrandt" tulips (many of which are virused but today "clean" versions are sold as "Rembrandts" though they technically aren't). Sorry for the error in identification. I used to have a bunch of red "Rembrandts" and I just thought of those when I posted, and when I checked my log it was actually "Sorbet".

Kannapolis, NC

It's beautiful, though, so I'll add it to my list. In looking through B&B's spring catalogue, I noticed and flagged several of the Rembrandt tulips, so are you saying they are or are not virused still? Sorry. I'm blonde!

Angie

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Those sold today as Rembrandt tulips aren't virused. Sorbet of one of my very favorites.

Kannapolis, NC

Thanks, Gemini. Just wanted clarifiation. I'm sure B&B would not be selling virused bulbs.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I am starting to get some color! But pretty spotty, but lots of things pushing up. I had a couple of the white hoop Narcissus cantabricus come up, but I didn't get a good picture. I have a very wild looking Iris histrioides Frank Elder. Some crocus Jeanne d'Arc which did almost nothing last year is blooming well this year. It is huge compared to Ard Schenk which is also blooming. I have a couple of a dark purple iris reticulata that are blooming but I am not sure which ones they are as I failed to put it in my journal. Off to search my purchases from 2007. Patti

nice, Patti. bottom left corner, is that an iris beginning to open, is that the F. Elder? Looks interesting.

For some reason it killed me to pay $$$ for the white cantabricus and the yellow one. Don't even know if they will fare well in my area. I think they were from B&B.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I just luv the F. Elder. I think it truly is blue. So many are purpley-blues.

Kannapolis, NC

Is the yellow one winter aconite? That's on my wish list for this fall and next spring also.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

vossner, yes that is Frank opening up. I did pay almost 2.00 each for them. They are tiny. I hope to get a good picture tomorrow.

Hemophobic, Yes that is a winter aconite, and I have a few popping up, but not as many as I planted. I think they are tricky, but if I read that if they like the spot they are suppose to spread, so I hope they like at least one of the beds I planted them in. I expected them earlier too. But, I haven't given up on them. I got a hundred of them for 10.50 from Van Engelen.

We are suppose to have rain tomorrow so I doubt I will take any strolls. But sunny on Sat. So I am looking forward to some real progress by Sunday.

Today I started a new area today Japanese Maples, hosta, ferns, hellebores, carex etc and many, many bulbs. So I am making up my first order for Brent and Becky. The bulb sickness continues. The trees are going to take years to look good, but the bulbs will take but a winter. Instant satisfaction. Patti

Patti-"The trees are going to take years to look good, but the bulbs will take but a winter. Instant satisfaction. "
I know what you mean, I am so excited about all the bulbs I planted last fall..I waited all winter in anticipation, and now they are all popping up all over! I am so excited..my neighbor was cracking up the other day over me outside every morning taking pictures of what new surprise had blooming or popped up the night before.

Kannapolis, NC

Artemiss: I'm sure my neighbors are laughing behind their curtains as well. I'm out there almost every day with my camera, snapping photos right and left, just to keep a record of the growth of my plants, so many of which are new for me this year.

Angie

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Patti, I can't wait to see pics of the new garden space! For that matter I can't wait to see your colorful swaths of bulb blooms in the coming days! Details, I need details, what bulbs have ya got ordered? You'll see a big difference in the Winter Aconite next year. This was the 2nd spring for mine, they were from B&B's clearance sale, and the first year they were kinda sparse, but this spring the clump was full with lots of blooms.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Artemiss, Maybe we need to see a picture of you out strutting around her bulbs in Ohio.

It is just like a surprise party every day and you never know is going to show up. I am fortunate that we have no neighbors here until summer. My big regret is that my DS has an April birthday and as he is an only child, this mom still can't stand to miss his birthday. He lives in New Orleans, which is never a bad place to go, but I will miss my bulb show for 10 days. But seeing him and going to Jazz Fest will make up for it. Plus he is a chef so I will dine like a queen. Patti

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

gemini_sage, I will post the list when it is planted with pictures. I have not got the bulbs figured out yet completely, but species tulips and miniature narcissus, reticulated iris, crocus (yellow & white) alliums, Fritillaria, along with Epimedium, Heuchera, Hakonechloa, Erythronium and a few I forgot like some siberian iris....on it goes.

Glad to hear about your winter aconite taking off. Patti

Springfield, IL(Zone 5b)

I can't believe that these are the same plants that I posted in the earlier thread as nubs..
'Jeannine' crocus coming back with a vengence:

(The red striped leaf is a "fire of love" greigii tulip that's just starting to come up)

This is "cream beauty" and "blue pearl" crysanthus..I didn't get a good picture of all the clumps together, but I really liked this color combo..

Unrelated..how do you guys make those cool collages?

Patti, LOL you make me feel better about myself with the bulb ordering. I am nowhere nearly as bad as you are heheheh - I want to see your new garden as well.

Kim, love the way you combine your pansies with flowering bulbs. It creates a really nice effect.

Artemiss, great crocus collections. They look spectacular en masse.

Hemo, glad you like the Sorbet. And Neal, thanks for the clarification on the Rembrandts. I was looking around last night and there are already lots of Rembrandt mixes out there, though I usually get tulips from Scheepers, B&B, or WFF as they seem to have the best for the buck. Actually WFF is kind of high on price but I have never gotten anything other than great bulbs from them.

Here is a nice Orange Lily-flowered tulips reappearing from last year. ^_^

Yellow Cheerfulness

This has been a great year for the freesias here. They did not get zap by a cold frost as they were budding out.

Springfield, IL(Zone 5b)

Thanks Steve! This is their first year..I am hoping they come back and multiply, because I was soo happy to see their little blooms after a long cold winter:) I also think I will put in more dwarf iris...that was one thing the bunnies left alone, and they do seem to grow really well here.
I love the color of that soft yellow cheerfulness..very cheerful indeed!

Speaking of best for your buck..I hit the end-of-season sales at B&B's and Scheepers and got a bunch of stuff for half off. In fact, several of the more expensive daffs on my "wish list" were on sale and I got them for a price it didn't hurt me to pay. I ran out of places to stick them before the ground froze, so I have several of my biggest pots stuffed with bulbs too (although it looks like the tulips are coming up, but not the gipsy queen hyacinths or the katie heath daffs...)

soilsandup: ahh, TRUE zone envy, as they are not hardy here in the frozen north! So pretty!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Steve, I need to get that 'Yellow cheerfulness' again. I planted 5 of what was suppose to have them (2006), but I have had nothing like yours and think I have screwed something up in my DG journal and never got them. I will double check that bed carefully this spring. Reappearing tulips are such a joy. Of course I have ordered a few that I hate or planted in not such a good spot and those are the ones always coming back rather than some of my favorites. I add new ones of the ones I truly adore each year so I keep the look, but I am thrilled when some come back.

Artemiss, I hope I get some nice 'Blue Pearls' like yours. My 'Cream Beauty' are great always, but I have planted some crocus 'Blue Pearls' three times and I have had virtually nothing from them the first two times. Thirds a charm?

Don't forget to look at the bulbs from Eflowergarden and Touch of nature. Bleek who is a member of DG is a wonderful vendor for fine bulbs, plus his sales in Nov are terrific and his final closeout in Dec is unbelievable like Tulipa Tarda, 200 for 15.00 or Dutch Master narcissus 100 for 15.00 or Hyacinthus orientalis Carnegie 50 for 18.75 which would normally be around 45.00 to 50.00 bucks depending on the vendor. I can still plant in Dec so that final sale he has is very good for me for areas that I want to plant things that I have not planted bulbs in before. I can drill away without hitting previously planted things. I have lots of ground left that I can plant large drifts of narcissus, muscari and scilla in. Patti

artemis, go the the help button of whatever photo program you use and select "making collages". It's relatively easy. Im assuming all photo programs enable you to do collages, yes? I use Picasa BTW.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I use Picasa 3 too. Patti

I just love true blue flowers so have been planting Scillias in spots. They are blooming!!! BEV

Same group of Tulips (as posted above) are fully developed. I've areas where more bulbs are suppose to have sprouted, but I haven't seen them yet. Hmmm. Those little critters will have to take the blame?

Thumbnail by Lily_love
Springfield, IL(Zone 5b)

Love those scillas! That true-blue is so pretty!
I may have to put them on my list for next year..the park near our house has a really nice perrenial garden, and the scilla are just getting started there now.

Hmm, I just use the photo program that came with my camera..I will have to look into Picasa for that collage feature since I don't think what I am using has it.

Kannapolis, NC

Artemiss: I use Picasa also. It's free!

Lily: I just looked at clump of bulbs blooming out in back (planted by a previous owner) and I do believe they are scillas. I'll take a photo and post it for help IDing it. I'm almost positive it's scilla. I'm excited!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Congrats Angie. Those are long live perennial bulbs. I've them scattered everwhere in my garden. :-)

Here is one of my container Tulips. These turned out so pretty, I'll try to pamper them for a repeat bloom next year. Will let everyone know -- next spring. :-)

Lily love, charming mixture, but what is the yellow airy looking plant at the back? I love it what ever it is.

Bev, love the little dancing scilla around your gazing ball. I adore the scilla siberica too. I started growing a new one for me last year and it was terrific. Very different and much later and bigger. Scilla pratensis Syn: S. litardierei or Meadow Squill. Here is a picture from last year. I hope it comes back. Lower rt is scilla siberica on April 19th and the other 3 or Scilla pratensis on June 9th. The narcissus is 'Pipit'

I also planted for last spring Genus: Scilla mischtschenkoana which didn't make much of an impact yet. But I read about it in Plantfiles from Todd Boland who know so much.

Scilla miczenkoana (S. tubergeniana) is not the most common squill, but is very desirable and long-lived. The flowers look like a larger version of Lebanon Squill (Puschkinia scilloides). The plants also have a pleasant fragrance if you get down on your knees!

I planted for this spring a group of scilla Campanulata 'White City' which I hope is as late as June and is 12" and white.

Bev, I think that last picture is a Chionodoxa forbesii, Glory of the snow. May be 'Blue giant' Patti

I did have some white ones with blue streacks. I will have to go look. Thanks for the info. BEV

Kannapolis, NC

Bev: I think bbrook's right about the chionodoxa. That looks a lot like the C. forbesii I planted this year.

BTW, I must share one of my oh, no moments. I think the reason my Anemone coronarias have not come up is because I did not soak those bulbs before planting! I just bought A. de Caen and upon reading the directions (if all else fails) I see that they require presoaking, so I've soaked them and plopped them into a large pot. We'll see what happens. Now, I still have a question about them. The directions say to plant with the pointed side up, but these things have points sticking out every which way, some of which I am assuming are the rooted ends. Can anyone assist me in determining which side is supposed to be the pointed side? Maybe I should post a pic.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

They are impossible to figure out, so many vendors say to plant them on their sides. That is what is suppose to work. Patti
