Spring Bulbs - What's Blooming? III

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Vossner, 'Golden Rain' is a paper white so it is normally forced inside for winter blooming in colder zones. I don't know how that works in zone 9.

I plant in small groups of 5 or 10 so a buck average is OK as they come back every year for me and spread. I figure a clump of 5 is like a fan of a daylily or a nice perennial clump which are more expensive. But I don't live in the south and I know you have to be careful about which ones you plant to have them to naturalize. Eflower/Touch of Nature has amazing sales in late winter sale. I bought 'Dutch Master' 100 for 15.00 last Dec plus Ice Follies' at 100 for 26.25 plus lots of muscarii, squill, crocus and tulips from him. I can still plant in Dec, so it is great for me.

Steve, that is wishful thinking about the dogs who are very bouncy and think that the flowers are trampolines. Patti

I can force paperwites indoors or plant outdoors. but yes, I can't buy any and all daffs out there. I'll make a note about Bert's deals re: daffs.

I was remembering Neal's Wooden Shoe coop too. Lovely lilies.

Steve..They are a small place but have beautiful stuff. I have ordered from them for two years now and have not been disapointed. You may not get a confirmation of your order right away...but good things are worth waiting for!!

Check out this shot from today. We had a brief break from the wind, rain and even hail to capture this shot.

A bug was enjoying one of my Daffodils or perhaps seeking shelter from the rain we had on and off today.

Thank you, Lily. Todd wrote that article before I became active on DG, so I missed it, even though I'm trying to go backward and read some great articles. I can't tell you how much I love DG! I'm so happy^_^

Angie, you're welcome! ^_^
Look here, I've my next wave of Tulips comin' up. I tried to stagger them out according to their blooming time, early, middle, or late spring. Last year my Tulips worked out successively beautiful. This year, there is a lag in blooms for my first wave of blooms were spent, only now the next wave is coming up.

Also, I ran across some of the invoices on my Tulips this year. The orange Tulips that look like that of Steve's are called "Daydreams".

Vossner: I grow N. Golden Rain in a strip between the house and the patio and along a driveway mixed in clumps with some white tazettas that I think are Ziva or Galilee. It's nice to have a bright yellow color among all the white paperwhites. But I haven't found Golden Rain is a real strong bloomer--it starts blooming in Nov and continues until Feb but there are never a huge number of blooms at one time.

Finally the Amaryllis. The Hyacinths bloomed about 3 weeks ago and are already gone. Didn't get a picture of them.

Chris, bummer about N. Golden Rain not being a strong bloomer. I agree, it's nice to have a strong yellow. Will have to keep looking for one. What others do you grow? I am fairly new to daffs, this is what I grow
ziva
erlicheer
geranium
pipit
avalanche
hillstar
thalia

I agree that "Golden Rain" is not a good bloomer, and it bloomed weakly for me at my old house. However, it is related to Grand Soleil d'Or which I planted for the first time this season and which is an awesome bloomer. We'll see how well it returns next year.

Lily, congrats on your second wave. I have a second wave coming up now too - it's actually a clump of last year's lily-flowered tulips returning to bloom a second year. Not as many of course as in the original bunch but still nice to see some returning.

Curly Lace and Sir Winston Churchill - both good varieties for the south.

have added curly lace to my tentative shopping list. I planted Winston Churchill 2 years ago and they didn't return after 1st yr. Also planted Katie Heath and that one never even came up. both from B&B.

Vossner: Your narcissus list has much in common with mine, although I haven't tried Hillstar, Pipit or Thalia. I also grow N. Trevithian which is fragrant and has returned for many years and multiplied. So has N. Grand Primo. One on my must-order list is N. Golden Dawn from Bill Welch down the coast in Carmel Valley. Golden Dawn is yellow with orange cup. See photo at
http://www.billthebulbbaron.com/Narcissus/GoldenDawn.html

He claims it is fragrant, multiplies well and doesn't mind summer water so you can overplant with annuals, if you want to.

I love Bill the bulb baron!!!!!! I imagine he sells out of daffs pretty quickly, huh?
Do get Thalia, an all white. Pipit is a short one, has been reliable for me, can't say fast multiplier but it does return.

Im not so sure that some of the ones that didn't return for me wasn't because of summer overwatering, ie Winston Churchill.

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

artemiss, Hurray, we have crocus blooming here too. Love your little iris picture. I got a chuckle out of the moth balls. So you put kitty litter out to keep the critters away?

Springfield, IL(Zone 5b)

Thanks! It is so nice to actually have things growing in the yard again..
And yeah, that's what it's for; after having had the majority of what started out as 500+ crocus bulbs I planted this fall mowed down to 10, I was desperate to try anything. A gal at work said her friend swore by used kitty litter around the edge of beds..same sort of idea as coyote or fox urine I suppose.
And that, coupled with the spray-on stuff that smells like stink-bait, has actually worked..I have little ragged blooms that have went several days now undisturbed.

(now my garden doesn't smell so great..but at least it's still there!!)

A couple of purple crocus popped up, including this sieberi tri-color:

I love the pansies and the pale pastel of those tulips..very serene:)

I'm shocked, but in a good kinda way. last year I had planted some species tulips, clisianas, and just a few minutes ago I noticed some greens peeking out. I'm delighted.

Steve: I've admired your Rembrandt tulips so much that I've put them on my wish list for this fall, so watch out next spring!

Vossner, love you baby pix in mondo grass. I meant to say. Irisoul wow so many pretty flowers coming. I haven't done well with fresias here maybe because they are biannuals? My Tulips today:
Note: the grass is gradually greening up, horay!!!
