California Gardeners' Succulents #2
... sounds like springtime is hard on all of our pocket books.
- hope the migraines go away.
I am so addicted to sedums too! They are SO easy to propagate and SO pretty.
My migraine is better, thank you! Too bad I'm still at work - argh! 2 more hours to go!
My migraine has improved too (I think...ask me again in the morning when the drugs have worn off!) But at least for now I feel semi-normal which is better than I've felt all week. Unfortunately I had a big study going on at work Wed-Fri or else I would have taken a couple sick days.
I'm glad both of you are feeling better : )
Drat. I forgot to take a photo of it today! Will post one tomorrow. I think DH's is different but aren't sure.

LOL Liz, I make a similar round too. I would not be too sad if you miss you the show. It really will not make you breathless. There succulent booth is the best though if you are into run do not walk to the show. I have never seen so many! And some were just so beautiful. All kinds. Thankfully I got over my need for them a few shows ago. I bought one for $36 and it still sits out on my porch looking half dead. Total abuse. So when I get the urge to get another. I think of that poor one.
Too bad about your headaches Liz and Robcorreia. I know they can be so debilitating. I have noticed I have not seen you around much Liz anymore but I thought it may be because I am not online as much. I am trying to be more productive in my life.
Do not even mention budgets to me, Janet. I have spent my next 5 years worth. I am in such big trouble. After being a glutton at the show for 2 days, I went to the Nurseryman's Exchange in HMB today. I have seen their plants for years at all the nurseries and was desperate to go. Well of course I went nuts and the prices were not that cheap either considering it is wholesale. But I did not let that stop me. LOL
They had a table of these, I thought they were so cute.
After we hit the Exchange, we went to lunch at a fav place of mine in HMB to eat, Pasta Moon. As I sat there I promised my friend that I was not going to another nursery for a least a month since I cannot be trusted. Then we parted ways and what do I do? Go to 2 more nurseries there and buy more succulents. I am nuts.
But I just loved this turquoise color.
Kell, those are beauts! I'm trying to get all of my stuff planted so I can feel virtuous about my spending---it will result in a gorgeous garden. Which reminds me, I'd better go water the unplanted stuff before it croaks.
Today I'm off to San Jose for a Women's Work Day at my friend's house. Three of us get together once a month at alternating houses & do projects together. It's always amazing how much we get done!
Luckily I'm feeling a bit better this morning...and the weather feels kind of icky already so it might be a good day to go to the flower show. Only reason I really want to go is I keep hearing this is the last year they'll have it, but I'm really not sure I want to drive to San Mateo and pay $10 to park and $20 to get into the show if it's not that exciting...think of all the plants I could get somewhere else for $30! Plus I have tons of work to do this weekend and I'm supposed to have lunch with a friend of mine too, plus the usual laundry, grocery shopping, etc. So I probably won't go, but we'll see!
My DH was saying we could go, and I thought the same thing about the price- especially 2x adults and 3x kids .... I'd rather spend the $ on plants.
Let us know if you go, I'm going to put my hardened off veggies in the bed - they look good, but the raised bed will give them a little extra warmth tonight & tomorrow.
Janet, I saw in your pictures your friends helping in your garden. What a great idea! And I bet it is such fun too! You already have a beautiful garden, mine is more like a plant store.
I want to feel virtuous too. I am going to try to get organized here. I need to put up those plant holders I bought last year in the coop and hang all my bromeliads around my porch. I have been slow because I was afraid Tom would have a fit if I put holes in the wood but I told him last night and though he was not thrilled he did not give me the NO look. When I asked where his zoom screw driver was, he did cringe make noises that he better do it for I would not plan it out well. Yea, I want 12 plant holders per column. LOL.
Glad you are better, Liz. If you go you will have fun. At least I did. Just not that grand. The trouble with Saturday is that so many people go, it is hard to see everything. I always love it at about 3 PM on a weekday when it really thins out. You get to really look at everything.
Gee Red, that does get so expensive. I do not blame you for second thoughts. Do your kids love plants too? They did have a whole play area for kids. I didn't look in but last year it looked like a great place for kids to interact with plants. My husband would not go to a plant show even if I promised to cook well for weeks. You are so lucky your husband has an interest. And even if mine did go, he would walk thru it so fast, it would be no fun at all. And I sure wouldn't be buying a plant.
This was the cement display. I wish I had a house where his creations would fit. I especially loved his flooring.
that is so cool ! - way better pic than the ones in the newspaper this morning ??!! I might have gone if I had seen that.
We went to Annie's Annuals instead, the kids got a kick out of the rooster crowing (he was quite grand). My kids are off and on with the plants, but get far more interested if it makes food. : ) - so they have helped plant the peas, spinach and carrots. They miss the raspberries, so I'll have to find some room for them - they just spread so darn much.
- I do not think my DH is much into plants, but he knows how much I am. I would've been there hours longer if I had been without my crew.
Here is a close up. I don't know why he likes this plant so much! It is pretty cool looking though.
Almost forgot to say, I've enjoyed hearing your misadventures at the Plant show and the nurseries. Makes me feel better about staying away from places like that and getting all those plants from the Mini Round up in the ground. Only a couple left to go. Whew!

Gee, SW, in that last shot she looks a liitle like an octopus about to eat its prey...LOL!
Who knows what attracts a guy to a plant. My DH surprises me occasionally---and not always in a good way. I spent 2 hours pruning the stuffin' out of my apple the other day so A) it would bear more fruit, and B) it wouldn't obstruct our solar panels. When I proudly pointed out all my work to Bill, he said, "And which one's the apple?"
I will have to go look at the newspaper, Red. Was it Annie's spring fling today? I know she has kid's activites when she has her open houses. I bet your kids would love going then.
What fun for your kids if you have a vegtable garden this year. I always loved tomatoes growing on the vine. As a kid I would sit on the ground eating them like apples.
I just got the email from Annies, spring party is on April 4 and 5. Boy is time flying by me.
yeah, we probably should have waited for the kids events - reminds me of Portland Nursery back in Oregon.... they had a great apple festival in the fall each year... with literally hundreds of apples to taste- delish!
.. I remember the veggie garden when I was a kid, too. My Dad worked at Lilly Miller (he was their only computer guy) so we would go in to work with him on a Saturday, go out to the warehouse and pick out seed packets of things we wanted to grow. THE BEST to eat it right out of the ground. I didn't like beets, but the beet tops my mom would cook up with bacon were soooooo good! I'm making myself hungry.
You can always go back! LOL
I want to go tooooooooo! : )
I probably will go back, I mean how did I come home with only one flat?
It was kinda cold and raining, so I felt bad for keeping my kids out there - they are all recovering from fevers and are just ending their antibiotics. But a little fresh air is ALWAYS a good thing.
rob,
There has got to be someplace down here for us to go to. Then we can get over our succulent envy. LOL!
WIB,
SW
You guys just had a ROUNDUP----I think we're even!!!
Okay, we're even. For now! LOL!
WIB!
SW
For now! lol!
They can go outside! All of my newest ones are still in their tiny pots but I will be either potting them up or getting the in the ground in the next few days.
I've been looking the the perfect pot - did find a big saucer that would've worked, but it was $30 - too much for terra cotta I think.
Now I'm considering either sticking them in and around a retaining wall I have in the back.
Great collection---I accept my small part of the blame. Kell and Sue and SingingWolf deserve MUCH more blame than I, however.
It was me, I was there, I did it. I accept full responsibility for my part in opening your eyes to the beauty of succulents. Everything else is between you and your bank account. LOL!
Can't wait to see what you do with them now.
WIB,
SW
ha ha ha ha - thank you all for taking your share of the responsibility (except ima, who kinda shirked it off) ; D
I just started the thread....all these other people are the ones posting gorgeous plant pictures...LOL!
lol : )
ima is absolved of any blame. LOL! ^_^
Can I accuse her of being an instigator? ROTFLOL!

SW
