I have a sand cherry that is about 7 years old. We have been pruning (cutting back) the plant annually. Obviously, not enough. It has grown to about 10 feet in height, and about 8 feet wide. We saw foliage on the outer branches last summer; the middle was quite bare. How far back can we cut and not hurt the plant. We were told by the local nursery to wait till this spring to cut it back. We would like to keep it at about 6-8 feet in height, but would like to see the foliage fill in the middle of the bush.
