dwarf black fig (ficus petite negrone) container size?

New York, NY(Zone 7a)

Got a petite negrone fig plant from park seed last spring. 1 foot tall at purchase.
It's in a 9" container (top diameter of pot) has 1 stem or trunk with leaves only coming out the top tip. This tip grew only about an inch or so last season. I wintered the plant indoors (zone 7) and about 2- 3 weeks ago the tip started to put out leaves, moved it to a south facing window.
I think I packed the soil to hard and was thinking of transfering to a larger pot.

-What size pot would be a good move from a 9"?
-Have not used fertilizer yet (facts from site purchase stated poor soil, likes to be dry between watering). Should I fertilize?

Thanks for any advice, I'm real new or "green" at all this.

If you packed the soil in too hard then it's fine to take it out and replace it with new soil, but I wouldn't put it in a bigger pot unless the roots are starting to circle around the edge of the pot--it's perfectly fine to put it back in the pot you have it in now. If it is getting rootbound, then I'd move it up to something that's one size larger than the pot it's in (most likely something in the range of 12"). You don't want to put something in a pot that's way too big for it because then you have tons of soil to hold moisture and not very many roots to take up the water, so the plant ends up with wet feet. And it's easy enough to overwater plants anyway without your pot size helping you out!

I removed it from the pot, and as suspected it's root-bound (roots circling around the edge of soil block). Accidentally broke one of the nice new large fig leaves when overturning to knock the plant out of the pot. Gotta go and buy a pot that's a bit larger tomorrow .

Thanks for the info ecrane3.

-Any thoughts on fertilizing, after I move to next size pot?
