I have a potted primula in bloom inside. I think it could move out to the garden at some point, but when? I'm in zone 5, and it is still quite cold here; just saw my first crocus yesterday. Thanks!
When can I move potted primula outside?
Rosemary I dont put them out until April/May. But you are in a warmer zone so maybe you can do it earlier.
But until then you might want to replant them in a much larger pot because they get terribly toot bound and it can be hard to keep them going.
Ive been doing this for many years now - buy 3-4 at Safeway in Feb/March and plant them out later. Usually they flower again in the fall the first year!
Wow, fancyvan, that's excellent! It's nice to know that it works in Calgary, since that means the chances are very good it will work here. (I grew up near Ottawa and even "severe" Toronto winters seem mild to me.)
Thats great Rosemary I have noticed however that the ones I plant out like this never get very big whereas the ones I have bought at the nursery grow and grow and need splitting frequently - hence I have a lot of purple primulas in my garden! Must be a different type.
Mine will probably start showing up soon and I have several ready to go out but probably not until next month.
Rosemary
I planted one out several years ago and has grown and needed dividing several times. This one pictured, started out like yours and has since been divided. The only thing you really need to watch before planting them out is they will quickly become rootbound and thus need to be watered more frequently.
Fancyvan - I am thinking that perhaps the difference in what you are seeing versus what I am seeing is the difference in zones.
