Planting Veggies Over Bulbs in Raised Beds

Moon, VA(Zone 7a)

I blew it big time in getting my tulip and daff bulbs in the ground in the fall, so in a panic, I loaded them in 4 of my raised beds. My question is, can I leave the bulbs in the bed (I plan to replant them around the yard the fall) and just put my veggies in around and over them, or will this cause a problem? Thanks for any help!

I don't see why not. It should work out fine. You'll need to let the leaves on them grow so they can store food for next year, so you'll know just where they are and be able to plant around them easily.

I feel for you. Two years ago I purchased asparagus plants, but they came before I could get my grandson to help me put the bed together. Other than counting on him to help when he said he would, my planning was fine. So, I "temporarily" put them in the two beds with the rose bushes. Oh, yeah, they are still there. They grew so big so quickly that I have no idea how to get them out of there.

But your bulbs should be easy to move this fall after your veggies are gone.

Thanks, Karen, I really didn't want to yank the bulbs, but I don't have the energy to create 4 new raised beds for my veggies, so I'll give it a try! Cathy

Funny, just today I read in the blog of a fabulous gardener, Margaret Roach, that she always plants her tulips in her vegetable beds, then plants her veggies on top. Her blog, awaytogarden.com has an article with photos about this. Check it out. She only uses the tulips as cut flowers and has to find a way to ward off the deer (who think of tulips as garden candy). Daffodils are poison so deer will not bother. I think you would have to plant the tulips quite deep to do this and only plant lettuce and other leafy crops. Good luck.

Wow, thanks so much for that! I 'll be sure to go to her blog. I have decided that I will find a way to make this work! Thanks for all the input. Cathy
