I'm a beginner - this will be my first spring garden. I've always wanted to grow sweet peas and, from all information on the packets, I can start directly in the soil, even before the last frost (I am in zone 6, but a zone 7 microclimate on an enclosed terrace). Last year, I started them in pots in May (I didn't realize it was a little too late). They grew in the pot, but never flowered. I have 8 or 9 differerent selections of sweet peas and would like to plant them directly in the soil, but don't want to waste my time. Has anyone in the DC area had luck with sweet peas? Thoughts, suggestions or ideas?
Growing Sweet Peas in Virginia
Start now!
thanks, Carrie. I've started dozens in peat pods. My question was for anyone in my area who has had luck with Sweet Peas. the ones i've started have not germinated and I will plant some this weekend directly in the ground. I'm looking for advice from someone who has had success growing sweet peas. Have you?
Not in VA but up here I have. I used to grow them on a chain link fence. They like a little cool weather and don't like the heat so much, so plant them straight outside ASAP! They like something to climb, like a trellis or something. How long have they been in their pots and have they had any cool nights?
