Hi.....this is a real newbie question....
I had a pile of leaves from last fall that I covered my vegetable garden with. Should I till them into the garden, or should I rake them off and throw them in a compost pile for a while? Will they take nutrients from my plants if I turn them under now?
leaves in the garden
I would till them under or just leave them. They'll GIVE to your plants, not take away. You can add them to the compost heap but, for me, that would be two steps instead of one.
OK, I just thought I heard that leaves take a long time to break down and if I add them to the soil too soon, they will actually rob my plants of nitrogen.
Till them in or use them as mulch for between the rows.
I just hauled a whole bunch of leaves into my garden and tilled them in last month and there's no sign of them now. My cabbage, potatoes, and lettuce are loving it!
