Daily Pics Vol 191

Woodbridge, VA

Dave, my husband wants to build a box with a slot like the one you have for Bluebirds. You indicated the slot was 2.5 inches long....how tall (vertical measure) is the slot?

tongues and house sparrows (hawk snacks) --
these are like little horrible dinosaurs on a seed killing spree.

tongue and flicker-- mmmmm good.

last one -- a while ago at my sister's house she ran in and said that a crow had a near-miss with a car
on her street and it was flopping in the middle of it, go out and do something.
So I find the bird, alive but not able to move too well, and lets me gently pick it up and get it off the street.
It was white streaked and seemed old, calm and held it- sis took some pics and we didn't quite know
what to do, seeing if it would regain strength and movement.
The crows fly over in mass almost every evening to their roost in the valley and tonight we were
surrounded by flocks in trees and wires and noisy and fly bys.
Don't know much can they have a heirarchy-patriarch or matriarch? Not knowing kinda spooked we
held it for a few minutes and then it stirred and wanted out. Setting it down, it didn't hesitate and took
itself up to a tall tree across the street and there was a ruckus, crows everywhere and then they all took
off in the last of the evening and hopefully the old one was with them. Felt like we helped.

Hello, again, Everybody! Confession: Dave that was my DH who posted. I just got back online, so I haven't read all responses yet. You may have already answered the question about the Bluebird house. Though I haven't read everything that's been posted, I've enjoyed looking at all of the photos.

Woodbridge, VA

Dirt, that is a sweet photo, and it was a very kind thing that you did. I have heard that Crows are very smart. Also, I think that I read somewhere where they have "sentries."

Wilmar, AR(Zone 8a)

Great pictures, everyone! I am so jealous of all the birding y'all seem to be getting done. I have gotten so far behind! Early mornings used to be my best time but with the time change it doesn't get light enough before I go to work! Drat! I'll get my chance soon though, hopefully.
Oh, 2ndcousinDave...I had a Titmouse do the same thing just last weekend. It was just a singin' its "spring" song and fluttering it's wings and hopping from branch to branch havin' a good ol' time. Is that a mating song/dance or just happiness?
Glad the crow was OK, dirt.

Sharon, tell him the slot is 2.5 inches tall and extends the full width of the front panel (as wide as the door)

Dave

OOPS! make that 1 1/4 inches tall. I was thinking of the round hole opening, which is 2 1/2. Apparently the bluebirds can squeeze in sideways through a smaller opening.

Sharon,

There are a bunch of plans on this site: I'm going to build a slot box too.

Wonderful pictures everyone. Dirt in ozone, I'm very happy to hear the crow might have survived. I just love my crows and I'm always worrying about them.

They are the sweetest little ones, but they sure make a lot of noise!

Thank you, Dave and Mrs. Ed. I'll take a look at the site. We've had some little Bluebirds hanging around our wooden fence out front. Every spare minute that I have, I've been watching to see if they're going to choose the box (with the hole) that my DH already has up on the fence. I'm nagging him to make one like yours.
Mrs. Ed, I like your photos of the water birds.
Nanny, Grackles are beautiful in their own way. Thanks for the pics.
Burn, that's such a cute little Chickadee, even though, through no fault of his own, he has no eyes. LOL
Those Swallows are so cute, Ducbucin. Dirt, the Flicker is gorgeous! Gardenpom, that's such a beautiful Cardinal. Do you have lots of Cowbirds? Our Inkberry bush was full of them one afternoon last spring. YIKES. It's a very good pic, though. Hello to you, Pelletory. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your photos, too. Once again, welcome to you, Sharran, and hopefully (Crazybirdlady) you'll have some daylight left when you get home from work. Back to my chores I go.

I went to the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Rookery this morning. The Night Herons and Roseate Spoonbills are gone, but the Woodstorks and Great Egrets are building nests. A few Snowy Egrets have arrived. A lot of the Great Egrets were making baby egrets.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

The Great Egrets were in full breeding plumage.

Bsharf, magnificent shots of the Great Egrets in full breeding plumage.

Redpolls have finally showed up at my feeder in good numbers. I took a few shots out the kitchen window. This is a male with a nice pink breast.

Nice to look at all the gorgeous shots.
Sunny but cold and windy today. Lured the crows in with some bread. Didn't have to wait long. Got some right away.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Waited in the tree in the corner of the yard.

Not only crows were interested in the bread. This Black-capped Chickadee, decided to sit down for lunch.

PERTH, Australia

What a sensational thread this one is. Fabulous shots. Spring is shining through.

I'd love to comment on each post, but I'd just get too wordy. Nevertheless, bsharf, they are fantastic shots of the Egret. Kniphofia, the Robin is indeed a darling. Duc, the Tree Swallow shots are just too sweet.

Great start to the thread, Dave. And your reward is Osprey tongue.

Beautiful detail Margaret, including the tongue.
