Is there some secret to columbines? I am a world class killer of columbines.

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

bordersandjacks, I just plant mine in ordinary garden soil (thats kinda acidic) give a little fertilizer and thats it.
Does your garden soil have good drainage? I don't believe the crowns of the columbines like to be wet and that may be why yours are not doing well, just a guess though, I am definately no expert at this, I also believe they tend to like acidic soil.

I have the same problem with columbines as Bordersandjacks. Bad luck trying to start them from seeds, too. :(

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

My columbines have buds but none are blooming yet. I agree w/iris that columbines need good drainage. They also don't like hot, humid weather much. The US natives Aquilegia canadensis (eastern red columbine) and A. chrysantha (Texas gold columbine) do best for me so maybe you should give those a try.

Here's Freesia alba. I got this from Plant Delights last fall and it's been growing in a pot on the deck. Since it's not really hardy here I put it in the garage whenever the temps got below the mid 20's but it wasn't too much trouble. The flowers are very fragrant!

Tom: Is that freesia blooming already or is that last year's blooms?

Tom, I like that Freesia. Very nice!

Core, the redbud picture is lovely. The ones on my place are just starting to open up.

Deb, the Lithidora and Clematis are beautiful. I've always wanted to try those two.

Oooh, I hope my Gamecock Iris blooms- first year for it, got it last fall.
The Jubilee Blueberry I got at Woodleys in Irmo - huge bushy plant loaded with blossoms. I want to grow blueberries, but want them in pots. It was pricey, but I used a 25 percent off coupon, so that helped. For some things I do not mind spending a little more.
I was torn, they also had the Sunshine Blue which is also supposed to do well in pots, but it did not look as wonderful as the Jubilee did.

Maybe next year I will get a Sunshine Blue.

My husband wanted to mow my patch of clover today- NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Besides, I think my bees like it.

Piedmont azalea.

This was in a rose bush and the branch became weighed down from all the rain. It's composed of ginger husks, spent hydrangea blooms and twigs. Really cute.

bordersandjacks - you're right about not mowing the clover, it does provide good early-season food for the bees. I intentionally sowed clover seed in my lawn when I first bought my house. It filled in the areas where the grass was not growing well and enriched the soil (plus, it looks a lot better than bare dirt or weeds). As the soil improved, the grass was able to replace most of the clover and now the clover remains only few small places. I've found the clover takes over when the grass is badly stressed but then gives way to the grass once conditions improve. I don't use "weed and feed" on my lawn and I just spot-spray for especially obnoxious weeds or just dig or pull them directly. This strategy works because now I actually have some topsoil developing and I find worms in my lawn, instead of the baked clay subsoil with half-dead grass that was here before.

Now for some more pictures from today... first is Lilac 'Blue Skies', just starting to bloom. Last spring it flowered very heavily but this year is seems to be taking a break and there are not as many flowers, but it's still pretty. Great fragrance too.

New for me this year - Tulipa clusiana 'Peppermint Stick' from Brent and Becky's bulbs. It appears similar to the species T. clusiana except the center is not as dark.

Iris: Looks like maybe a primula of some kind?

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Hemophobic, Found out they are 'Forget Me Nots".

Myosotis? I have those seedlings, but mine aren't blooming yet. Also, I planted some Anemone coronaria `Bicolor' last fall but they are not emerging. Not sure I planted them correctly, as I didn't soak them first.

Thanks again.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Tom, I love the Peppermint Stick! I planted them for the first time and they are buddng now. Yay.
My biggest excitement comes from today's discovery that my Alpinia Japonica is blooming!
The past two winters it got too singed, but this season I really worked at keeping it protected and it looks like it paid off!! Yahoo!

I meant to get on here an howl a little. this should be a little late - perhaps the recent snow delayed it, but I had my first ever SDB iris bloom on March 31st! Wizard's Return - cute little guy!

Thalia daffs are in full bloom with muscari surrounding them. my first tulips I've had bloom started March 31st, too. Dogwoods, redbud, forsythia in full bloom. early azaleas popped yesterday. Hyacinths are bloomed out already. the thing that's blooming most are the weedS - found dandelions all over, and grass is setting seed! mums are up and out of the ground, lilies are about 8" tall. Roses are leafing out. they and the TB irises are already showing leaf spot - gotta get on that.

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Deb, How exciting it must be to see it start blooming after the last two winters! Looks Pretty! Hope you will be posting another photo when it's fully open!

Kannapolis, NC

Maybe we should start a new thread: What's blooming in April?

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Bonjon, it all sounds gorgeous!
Iris, I ws pretty excited to see it. I hope the upcoming frosty weather doesn't spoil the fun.

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Deb, I would put some plastic covering on it just in case.

Hemophobic, Yes, Seems like we should start a new thread.
