growing hydrangea in the compost heap!

Ravena, NY

We had a break from the cold weather yesterday here in Upstate New York.So i decided to turn over my compost heap .Imagine my surprise to find last years cuttings from an hydrangea shrub with fresh new leaf buds! I have put them in a vase with Some Pussy Willow that is rooting ,and who knows maybe have some new Hydrangea.I was surprised that the cuttings had survived our tough winter! Let it be Spring!!

What a nice surprise! I assume it has roots? I'd pot it and keep it inside until warm weather when you can plant it outside.

No none have roots, only fresh new leaf buds. But I have read that pussy willow (salix shrubby willow) cuttings in water releases a hormone that encourages some plants to root.Though i have rooted hydrangea in plain water with success! My Salix are blooming at this moment in a vase by my window.I have about 30 cuttings ready to plant as soon as the weather permits. Its great to see Spring in Feb and March in my house! They start to sprout roots in about 2-3 weeks. Also they are great for a wet area.
