How to cut back Papyrus

Venice, CA

I am helping a friend cut back his Papyrus as the middle is all dead. The new growth grows outward and a lot has no roots.
How do you get rid of the center and get the plant back to middle to start fresh?
I tried to do mine a couple of years ago, but they did not take and died.
Any photos showing how to cut out the center and not kill the hole group would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

They are so easy to re-root. When you cut the top off, turn it upside down in water or wet soil and it will regrow fairly quickly. You may get enough sprouted that you can remove the old ones. But do it after the tops have roots. I'm assuming that it is in a pond-type setting.

Cathy thank you for your response. No these are not in a pond like setting, but in a garden. I will try to take photos in the next couple of days to post so you can see them. I don't understand 'cutting off the tops".... so I hope my photos to come will make sure it's the right kind of plant.
Thanks,

I too have a question about where to begin with my "over grown" Papayrus plants. I have an artifical grass putting green on the side of my house and on the house side we planted a line of Papyrus plants in 2004 in a bed of good soil and white sand with a controlled drip/spray sprinkler system. They grew like crazy all of these years as I cut off the dead stalks; but now they have started dying back and not producing or if they do produce they are weak and yellow. I'm watering a lot but I believe they need divided. I just don't know where to begin as this is a 38 ft long line of plants and I've cut back the stalks all along so there is a solid covering of the roots on top of the ground. Where do i begin to save this from dying out completely. Your help is so appreciated. Thanks, Jack Cole
