Windy Sites

Garfield, AR

I need some help! We are making a berm on each side of a new driveway to our house . They are on a wide open, cold and very windy hill. Any suggestion on what to plant? We live in zone 6.

I am not certain what type of plants that you want, however, native plants (almost) always work well. Also try the Cooperative Extension in AR and see if you can find any answers http://www.arhomeandgarden.org/

Good Luck

Just an idea, but you might want to consider some of the small or medium grasses. Many are hardy in your zone and can tolerate the wind. Northern sea oats and dwarf fountain grass are jtwo that should work; I'm sure there are more. If you like the idea of grasses, you might want to ask over at the Grasses and Bamboo forum for more suggestions.

For evergreens search out the ones that come with oily/shinny leaves as they dont get scorched by wind burn, The Grasses sugested too are great as the russell and sway with the wind and you get some that have the most attractive seed heads, look for ones that dont grow out of control by runners under ground, there are too many ornamental grasses to mention but they look good even in winter when a frost gets onto the foliage and seed heads, there are green, burnt orange, russet, yellow etc so you can make different clumps to grow say about 3 of each type, evergreens come in all shades of green too, some flower, some give different shades when the new growth arrives, some are open and undersides of the leaves are other colours, so if I were you, I would go to the library and get some books that show planting schemes for your conditions and this will give you ideas, the planting will also help to bind the soil and stop it getting washes down and away. good luck.
