Orchid Question

Ponchatoula, LA

What makes the bloom turn yellow and not open on orchid. The leaves look good its just the blooms one by one.

Conneaut, OH(Zone 5a)

Really need more information to answer your question. The plant is not getting something it needs.Too much water, not enough water. Not enough light.Plant is to cold.Lacking nutrients.

Athens, PA

What kind of orchid?

My guess is that it probably is not enough humidity. I started out with Phaleonopsis orchids and they were doing what you described. I found that just misting the plants daily was not enough. You need to put them on a bed of gravel with a level of water in the gravel in addition to misting them. I found that either pea gravel or aquarium gravel in an old pie plate works great.

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

This is usually called bud blast. Could be temp change, humidity, light level change.

Misting any plant does NOTHING for humidity. You'd have to mist every 5 minutes 24/7/ for it to work. A humidifier is the best device for raising humidity.

Athens, PA

A humidifier would probably be best - especially with certain orchid varieties.

I didn't have any problems getting dendrobiums or phaleonopsis to flower without one though.

I would like to try to my hand at cattlyeas and vandas though - can I get them to flower without a humidifier?
