I have a use for a lage amount of Rail road ties. (Horse area) Just moved to St Louis and didn't know if anyone knew of a place I could pick some up. I googled and found a blog on this site from last year and I am hoping that someone can help me out. Thank so much
Rail road ties
The best advice I can give you for your railroad ties is to call a railroad in your area. When they replace them, the employees usually have access to them. They are not suppose to sell them but maybe can 'give' them to you when they replace a section of the line. Perhaps there is a Union Pacific depot or office in your area. If they don't have any, maybe they could tell you where you could get some.
That will probably be a lot better than the hardware/home centers price of $8 - 10 each.
I have HEARD that your local utility company gives away used telephone poles after they replace them...
Have you tried craigslist or freecycle?
We've picked up RR ties at Home Depot & Lowes.
The phone co here does give the old poles to you. Our houses former owner used the ones from this neighborhood as fence posts. The termites loved them, tho they didi last 10 years. You will need a pick-up truck and a chain saw to cut them to your trks size.
I wonder if the RR gives the ties away. They seem to just leave them to lay where they were replaced. Maybe you could call and see?
