March III Blooms

(Zone 1)

I'm loving all the pretties you are all growing! I either start my day looking at the AV Bloom thread, or like today, end the day gazing at all the lovely blooms. Great growing, as always!

LOL, now y'all got my curiosity up and had me wondering what Streptocapus Jaco's Gem looks like so I had to go google. ^_^ I couldn't find one called Jacob's Gem but found one called Jaco's Gem: http://www.gesneriadsociety.org/conv2006/plants/bigpics/2006Class42C.htm

It's a pretty plant (foliage wise), with the huge leaves, but those flowers aren't really anything to get excited about are they?

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

WOW,You guys were busy today.Beautiful pictures!

Congrat Bonnie,Going to the flower show will be fun.Your going to be a busy bee this week.Remember the word Lemon Frills.LOL...^_^

I went to the County Extension office today.I'm happy to report my little AV posted on the other thread does NOT have mites. It got a clean bill of heath.I think it was a bad case of over fertilizing.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

I agree that Jaco's Gem is ugly. More of an oddity or novelty than anything else. I've grown it but didn't keep it.

Brenda...from the March II thread, I love your sinn Cherry Sprite and all the streps as well. No doubt, you have a very green thumb. I am so glad you sowed your strep seed. I can't remember the cross but I do remember being interested in what you will get from it.

Gail...always a joy seeing your well grown wonderful collection of streps. I've not seen Winter Blossom before. So sweet looking.

I am so glad, Jan! Good you checked with a pro and now you know. It's easy to burn those tender center leaves. I managed to do that with several of the baby streps and was very annoyed with myself. Trying to push too hard.

A strep baby's first bloom but it is mismarked and needs an id if possible. Jim? Gail?

A keeper...Victorian Valentine.

My first guess for anything white & purple will be Purple Panda, even though I'm sure it's not! I guess I'm biased! ^_^

Here's a pic of Kei-Yoki . . .

Victorian Valentine is a definite keeper GoldLeaf, just beautiful with the extra detail!!

Gail I backed off to using 1/4 tsp of the Optimara fertilizer per gallon as I was using it almost each every I watered and that amount has worked for me.

Syrui your Kei Yoki is impressive, it looks very lush. As to my watering, I still hand water, top or bottom, whatever is convenient for me at the time. It's a lot of work with the number of plants I have right now which is why some of them have to go come spring!

Bonnie you have a very nice variety of streps there! I haven't seen my B Ribbon Candy bloom in awhile and your picture reminded me of how much I like it. I better go do a search on my plant stands.

HGran I was watching that Big Yolk strep too, it went for over 25.00!!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

good morning brenda ^_^

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Morning to you too Jan!! I haven't forgotten the seed list I'm going to get to you ...... someday! ^_^

Speaking of seeds here's a plant Jan grew from seed that has turned into a big one!! It's a sinningia and it's about 3 feet tall with big beautiful leaves and very small blooms in comparison to the leaves. I'm going to plant it outside when and if it ever warms up here and see what it does!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Love the pictures! Bonnie your Streps.are gorgeous!
Brenda love your Sinns. and that Kohleria flower is very striking!
At the risk of repeating myself....I'll do it anyway LOL.Why is Seren considered difficult? And Gail, tell me more about putting Strep.leaves in the frig. with a little water, please.
Since I'm full of questions I'll ask one more.Do those of you who put Marathon in the soil wear gloves when you pot and repot? I just wondered if it's necessary.
Lynn

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Looking at all the pretty blooms. I have to get a longer sheet of paper. Have to add more streps. They are so pretty.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Jim for the id and yes, it is Gwen. Jan, I did grow it from a leaf. Maybe you did send it? Anyway, thanks for the second opinion. When I checked the strep website Jim linked to, I saw right away it was Gwen. I love this strep as it grows so nicely and the blossoms are so charming.

Brenda...wow, a sinningia 3 ft. tall! What is it?

mrsbonnie...beautiful streps. One thing before I forget is the one you have labeled as Summer Parfait isn't according to LLG.

Summer Parfait -

Huge, 3 inch frilly white blooms, are heavily netted in royal purple. Deep plum streaks, protrude from the white throat, that shows varying amounts of yellow. Bloom also has a pencil line white edge.

Shes got savannas summer parfait,,

JIM

its pretty

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, okay, Jim, Savannas Summer Parfait is a pretty one.

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

I just took a picture of my recently blooming AV. I bought it in 2006 as a NOID at my grocery store; moistly dead. When I got it ro bloom, it was a thumbprint in sort of a mauve. Last year it bloomed the same. Now it blooms mostly white, but the stamen is a deep purple. Very interesting.

Yes it is Cheryl, but are you sure the tag didn't get switched? First bloom can be a little different, and different light and other conditions can make blooms look a another color, but mauve to white is very uncommon.
Lynn

( Kim) Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Well This is what I did transplanted it makes me feel sane so I did some Streps
I will send 2 pictures

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Kim you are doing so great with those Streps.! It's really windy here,also.9 degrees tonight...ugh.
Cheryl, then I don't know.Maybe someone else has had a bloom change that much, but not me.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Only gessie I have blooming right now is an alsobia...
Always pretty though!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Not in my wildest dreams could I image what 9 degrees must feel like. I lived in the mountains of New Mexico for 11 years and we didn't even get those low temps.......it was zone 6a.

All my plants know it is spring. Streps are blooming so quickly now and the whole front porch is blooming (plastic wrapped around the front porch because of 50mph winds everyday).

Kim, doesn't it feel good to just stand there and pot up plants! My favorite thing to do other than sticking leaves for new babies ^_^

I posted on another thread that I dropped my giant begonia in bloom yesterday on the front porch. It was sitting on a table and all I wanted to do was turn it so the sun would hit the other side through the plastic.

Here is all that is left.......bummer
Hi Alsobia lady!! Nice bloom!

Gail,it can get to -20 here and worse if you count the the windchill.Brrr.
