My first flower bed and homemeade vine trellis from saplings

Wichita, KS(Zone 6a)

I worked all day yesterday and got the front flower bed done. At least I think it's done. I had to tear out the dormant grass that straggled up to the foundation. I tilled by hand using a garden claw and got a great workout too :) Later, I harvested some volunteer saplings from the alley and made my morning glory trellis. Daylight ran out and so did the energy! So far, all I have in there are the stargazer lily bulbs and some irises my mom dug up and brought over to me. Their corms were anywhere from 2 to 4 inches long. Is there anything special I need to do for them? it's slowly warming up here although it looks like we still have several nights in the 20's to 30's ahead of us for the next few weeks.

That's going to be a great looking bed! Stargazer lily is one of my favorites but I haven't grown it. Let me know how it does for you and good luck:)

hey! im going to try that saplings thing! we have lots of sticks ...i need a trellis, what a cute idea!
Babee, here my irises grow practically on top of the ground. i never mulch them during winter, and they are early risers, most are already sprouting up and they multiply like crazy:) ...looks like you have a good start on your flower bed, let us know how it grows!

Thanks for the great idea of how to make an easy trellis. Now that is something I can do with asking my DH and waiting for his help. His energy is limited due to health issues so I don't like to impose on him when I can do it myself.

Thanks again

babeegirl - Is it possible to post a pic showing the top of your trellis? I am looking to see what you did with the top. If you can post a pic that would be awesome. Gonna pick a nice day when DH isn't here and make my trellises. I know that he will want to do it or change the way I am doing it.

Oh, oh. DH just looked over my shoulder and started asking questions when I scrolled back to have another look at the picture.

Aw well. He is working tomorrow. Let's hope the weather is warmer than today.

babeegirl, I have some bean vine seeds if you are interested.

That looks great! I'll need some vertical accents if it ever gets to be planting season here...do you mind if we copy you?

thanks everyone! I'd love to say I could show you a pic of the trellis top...however...(there's always a however)......the trellis was nicely stored in a safe corner of the spare bedroom UNTIL it got in the way of Nitwit the Terrible (our siamese) and Mac (our 105 lb 1yr old Golden Retriever) playing chase. Nitwit decided to climb to the top and Mac decided to knock him off using his signature body slam technique which didn't go so well for the trellis. The poles didn't break but it's not exactly upright at the moment. Smokey I would love some bean vine seeds if you have some to spare! Now, tell me the truth, do these two look like they would cause chaos and mayhem? this pcture is about 7 months old...they have both grown since then :)

Don't kid about things like that. There is nothing better in the world than the loyalty, love and golden heart of a goldie. Obedience school really helped Otis. Turns out it was us that needed to learn. Gosh I hate it when I get caught being stupid. LOL

Take care

Oh - What a gorgeous kitty! It is a meezer! Unfortunately, our old dog 14 1/2 yr. old Alaskan/Siberian Husky thinks that all kitties should be chased, caught and chewed up.

Not Otis though. He loves everything. More pics of Mac please. He is gorgeous. Otis is two/toned. Cream and gold. Gotta get more recent pics of him.

This is a pic from Feb. 26 with my one and only DGS. You can see how much Otis adores that baby. The gate was up so Otis found another way to keep an eye on "His
Baby." He is a total goofball about our DGS and doesn't leave his side.

he's beautiful! both of them are! I haven't seen a golden that color, he looks like his fur is spun gold.

Thanks babeegirl.

Aiden (DGS) is a lot of fun and Otis is my goofy handsome dude. His colours are still changing a bit and he is getting more soft gold colour. He is basically a two-tone goldie if I had to describe his colour.

He is one of the best parts of my life^_^

I had to reply, when I saw the picture of the dog and cat lying together March 30th, I thought "what is that dead deer doing there - did it get in her new garden bed?!" LOL The white cat looks like the belly and the chair legs I thought were antlers! btw I have a 90 pound shepard and an 17 yr old siamese cat - your picture brings back memories of when she was so light too. Glad it wasn't a deer ruining your new garden!!!

i know some of you dont have the problem of certain stix once cut growing again, but choose the wood for your cuttings carefully? n dry well, or you could end up with, lets say, a grove of weeping willows...

Here's an updated picture of my little garden. The Glads and Zinnias are doing great!
