What would you choose for your own memorial plant???

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No, I don't know anything that your doctor doesn't. ^_^ But it is an interesting question.

Not sure myself. Maybe a long-lasting, majestic tree like a sequoia. Or maybe a noxious weed so I can continue to annoy people. Could go the 'easy' way and choose one of my current favorites like viburnum, dawn redwood, hydrangea and Japanese maple. Have to think more about it.

What about you?

forget me not!

(only kidding)

I'd have to think about that.

Maybe an old fashioned lilac.

Or maybe basil. It smells good and my family would think of me whenever they catch a whiff
and it's useful and the deer won't eat it!

Or Touch - Me - Not!

ewwwww I hope not
any more than Johnny JUMP UP!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

This a weird topic Victor.
Probably something with my name in the name of the plant...there's a beared lily with the name 'Just Jennifer'
Depends on if my plot is in the sun or shade(haven't picked one out yet)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I need to think about this

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Sweet William, Under the Weeping Willow, of course!

Never gave it any thought ..... not sure what I'd pick, though the weeping willow has always been my favorite tree. Maybe a Sugar Magnolia, too. Hmmmmmm ....... maybe something invasive ...... be just as much a pain after I'm gone as while I am still here!!! ^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good thing you did not pick the 'other' willow, Will!
I was curious to see how many would post on this thread. I think people are very uncomfortable thinking about the fact that one day they will no longer be here.
No plot for me - I want to be cremated.

OK - when I am dead and gone - I am gone. I dont want nothing left hanging around.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I have never seen a plant with my name in it.... sooo I guess I'll just have to make one I can name after myself - lol. : ) Very funny about the invasive plants ha ha -good idea!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

well it would have to be a garden bed one tree is not enough! final design to be determined - yes there would be a couple jm's and dwarf conifers - and like willie said sweet william :)

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hmm. it is curious that you bring this up. We buried my grandmother (98) last week and I was looking at her plot and trying to decide if the rose "St. Cecilia" (her name was Cecilia) would survive there. Both she and my grandfather where amazing gardeners, so they should have something beautiful to represent them. However, they are in the shade of a huge maple grove. Not much will grow there except moss.....

However, when it's my turn, I want to use something like this http://www.ecopod.co.uk/ and have a riot of roses (the ones I can't fit in my garden now) planted over my spot.
:)

North Augusta, ON

My Dad wanted to be cremated and his ashes scattered over a really high hill overlooking a lake up North. We owned some property there, it was heaven!!
When it came time for me to do the scattering, with a piper playing Amazing Grace behind me...a beautiful still morning. Well, as soon as I started scattering a huge wind came up from nowhere and blew all of his ashes back onto me...in my hair, my face, covered my clothes...

I want to be cremated and scattered somewhere. Probably won't happen though because there won't be anybody to do it.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i'll be cremated as well - still can have the memorial garden bed

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Asiatic lilies for me. Dahlias would be too high maintenance for the average joe sigh. ps that is if joe actually plants something for me.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - that must have been upsetting, Lee Anne! Actually funny if it were not personal.

Sorry about your grandmother, Deb. Nice long life though. You can always plant memorial plants anywhere.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

I have St. Cecilia in my garden and one in my Mom's. My daughter's middle name is Cecilia. So she is well represented!
Can you imagine living 98 years? No one had cars, tvs, phones were a luxury. Some folks had electricity, but not everyone. She lived through 2 world wars, the Depression, the Influenza epidemic....
Our lives are peaches and cream compared to what she grew up with!
Deb

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very true, Deb. My grandmother lived to 98 as well. And she was absolutely healthy and spry until close to the end. Amazing.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

my moms mom passed at 93... the year before I came home from school to find her chopping down a tree in our yard with a hand ax... she always amazed me

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

this is an interesting thread Victor..... where do you come up with these ideas anyhow?? lol

I'm going to have to think about this one.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Maybe one of the many things named "Pixie". lol Off the top of my head without thinking about it too much i'd have to say lilies. Either daylilies or bulb lilies.. asiatic, or oriental.

Dudley, MA(Zone 6a)

I don't have to think about this at all...I would love to be blanketed in Forget- Me-Nots....my favorite...I used to own a Flower shop by that name!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

maybe viola and pansy for me... the little faces always make me smile

Hi JennyAnne

Is this the first time posting here? If so welcome aboard.

Thomaston, CT

Wow---definitely a thoughtful topic---but my Gram was a great gardener, had lots of different plants, but I remember & love her iris the best---still trying to find a very deep yellow, with deep purple falls---very fragrant----would like that planted by my gravestone, which I already have. When our son worked summers at the town cemetery, he urged us to buy a "good spot"---we did, & have a black granite stone, very plain. All I wanted was a gold cross on it, but my DH had names & dates put on----I guess I can have them erased.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Great topic for a thread, Victor. Personally, I LOVE daisies, and so daisies it will be. That is, unless pixie names a daylily after me (LOL!)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Great responses. Welcome Jenny!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I want to be cremated and put in my compost pile. Of course I would want catnip for my memorial plant. Then all the neighborhood cats could have a good time on me!

ROTFLOL

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Good one Yank!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee. But they will probably poop and ruin the compost.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

How will poop hurt the compost?

You dont put animal cat, dog into compost...... Cow is ok as they dont eat meat.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would not use it on any edibles, but be my guest.

Cow manure should go in the garden in the fall. Some people do put it in the spring time but I dont want my hands in there!

Like elephants eat only plants, leaves etc. You go to Africa and are starving for water you can ring out their dung and not get sick.

Ocean Springs, MS

I told my kids a couple of years ago that I wanted to be cremated and planted in my garden! None of them liked the idea! LOL
Just throw my ashes to the wind. I'll help the earth grow whatever happens to thrive there!
love, julie

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi Julie! I like that idea too. Just check the wind direction first.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I like Julie's idea, too. I'd like it to be near a body of water, though. Any body of water will do, as long as it's not a puddle.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Body of ashes near a body of water.
