window box ideas

eastern, NC(Zone 7a)

I have 2 window boxes on my barn that are in full shade all the time. I need some ideas of flowers to put in there. Preferably a flower that will hang down. Not really into ivy or greenery vines.

full shade flowers. a hard bill to fill. impatiens should spill over the side. begonias bloom in shade; some are more upright than others. if you can take colorful leaves and not flowers, coleus or caladiums are both great shade plants.

flowermom,

There is a coop going on right now for shade loving begoinas. They are Tuberose Begonias and have the pendula type, which hangs down. Take a look at what they have to offer, great price too. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/959652/

You could always get something like a trailing fuchsia. We have loads of them all in different conditions.

I adore the caladiums with hot pink. they look so good mixed with something blooming white or a bright lime green.

Ornamental sweet potato "Marguerite" would fill the bill for light green. And it trails wonderfully. In deep shade it's likely to be lanky. People from cool, damp climates mean well when they recommend fuchsias. However, in the states they do best along the Pacific coast- Northern CA, Oregon and Washington state.
