I live in South Georgia and want to divide my daffodils. Some did not bloom this year and someone told me it was because I needed to divide them. I think I know how ( I watched a video) but don't know if I can do it now (they've about bloomed out) or if I have to wait until fall.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm new at this. Thanks
Faith
dividing bulbs (daffodils and snowdrops)
I'm no expert but, personally, I'd wait until the green tops have died down so all the energy from them is stored in the bulbs before you move them. Fall would be my choice since that gives them time to reestablish their root system and they will be more likely to bloom next spring.
thanks so much. that certainly makes sense. Have you ever heard that it is ok to "braid" the greenery after the boom is gone?
Wait until the greenery has browned out; that means that the bulb has stored all it's going to store for the year. Braiding the greenery will help keep it from spilling all over the place. By the way, in my younger years when I was in law school at UGA, I used to do a lot of fishing in irrigation ponds found in the middle of the onion fields of Vidalia. Brings back fond memories (and not so fond memories of water moccasins and rattlesnakes). Great fishing, though.
